Smudgie has developed a white patch in the centre of his eye where his iris would be...could it be a cataract... he is 2 years old and in good health apart from this .any advice would be welcome
It could be, although a visit to the vets would be a good idea, one of my old girls Sherbet developed cataracts at about this age, it didnt affect her at all, it just meant that everything -foodbowls etc had to stay in the same place. Her quality of life was as good as it had always been. although she was prone to more frequent eye infections but that could have been a coincidence.
If it has come on from one day to the next, it could be a hay poke gone infected.
If it has come on slowly, it is probably a cataract (usually appearing as a series of dots that grow over the course of several weeks) or nuclear sclerosis (where the whole pupilla goes evenly white over the course of a few days).
Sounds like an ulcer, guinea pigs can get them quite often. Get ** pig to the vet and it should be easily sorted with some dropped providing its not a deep one. If its not this them I'm not sure...
Hi i've just had this problem with my little girl Velvet
She was OK and it was a long weekend so i'd seen a lot of her, went down to pick her up for night time playtime and clean out and found her with a pale blue/opaque eye 8... It's now gone to white.........she has been diagnosed with a cataract, she is only 15 months old. I am trying to get a wee sample to put into the vets, but she's not cooperating rolleyes
I'd definitely go to vets and make sure it's not a hay poke or an abscess they can do this easily with some drops in to their eye, it doesn't hurt them.
Good luck xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
took smudgie to the vets...they wern't sure what it was so they gave me antibiotic drops to use for a week which we did but there was no improvement.We took him back & the vet said they could remove his eye but as its not causing him any problems...he's eating as normal etc it would be best just leaving him alone.
I really would'n want him to go through an op if it's not absolutely neccessary
awwwwww sorry to hear
I'm with you too, i don't want to fiddle with my girls eyes too much either :{
I have been told our girl has diabetes, do you think your vet might test for that too? I'm being told i can control it more with diet.
