@ Sodapops – I never said I didn’t believe anything you’ve said, I was just comparing our two cases.

Update: - Turns out I didn’t have the heart to put my rodents to sleep afterall. I decided not to put the black one down due to him not being at death’s door just yet and Niki saying that some rodents can cope fine after the death of its friend and you can never tell. & then I decided what the hell to money and to try surgery for the fudge coloured rodent. I mean I’ll be dishing out about £4000 on having my roof re-roofed for the third time in 4 years soon so a couple of hundred pound extra isn’t going to make all that much difference. I’d probably regret it later anyway and if I have it in the bank then what better thing to spend it on. BTW, I didn’t say I couldn’t afford it.

When I got home from work last night his ear was in a worser state and I couldn’t see the polyp for puss so I booked him in at the vets at 8.30am this morning to go through the options. The vets options were: -

a.) Put it to sleep.
b.) Sedate it, clean out his ear and examine it properly and from there to either attempt to remove it during sedation, or to remove it with general anesthetic or to not remove it and try eardrops. He said ear drops may be a good way to manage the condition and future flare ups if the polyp stays but that they’re hard to get in. I told him I’d prefer to have the polyp out so he’s probo on the operating table right now with the vet having a good rummage inside his ear. He says if he thinks he can get it out under sedation then he will, it’s basically up to him and what he finds in there. In his opinion he thinks the polyp is oozing puss rather than puss being behind the polyp further down the ear canal but he’ll find out for sure later. I told him of my concerns about baytril getting dissed online and if the polyp is cut out then what antibiotic does he want him on and he sticks by baytril so that’ll be what I’m having. I imagine for this case it probably is a good drug to use though.

He also said there was an option to remove the ear canal altogether to prevent any further problems but that its complex surgery, he's more used to doing it on dogs and cats rather than smaller rodents.

So there you go. I’ll phone them later if they haven’t phoned me and see what the score is. I’ll report back.

Sounds like a good decision. Keeping fingers crossed it all goes well & he makes a speedy recovery.

Out of surgery now. He couldn't do it under sedation cos he was jerking about and the vet thought the ear must have been really causing him real irritation so he put him out fully and removed the big polyp but he thought there may have been a second smaller one further down the ear canal but that he wasn’t sure but by then the ear was filling up with blood and there was nothing to see after that. He’s decided eardrops are possibly a bad idea because he couldn’t be sure his eardrum is intact so has decided oral anti biotics are best. He says the polyp could grow back or others form but hopefully now that the big one is out it should heal up a bit and cause him less distress. Says he’s very groggy at the mo and that his ear is gonna hurt so he’s got painkillers. I’ll pick him up at teatime. Yew.

Best of luck to your piggie for a speedy and easy recovery :) It can't have been pleasant for the little gentlepig but I'm sure he'll feel better now :)

Sue, a difficult decision for you to make, but I'm so pleased you didn't pts.

I hope he'll now start feeling more comfortable with the main polyp gone, poor little chap.

Please keep us posted - I'm sending him get well thoughts.

Thanks people.

He’s fairly perky though not eating right, but he is eating a bit so hopefully he’ll pick up more and improve. He’s done some tiny poos on strings, don’t think he ate hardly anything yesterday at the vets. Done bigger poos this morning. & he drunk loads when he got home so he mustn’t have had any water. He’s being picky with his food, he won’t even eat his tomatoes which is his favourite. Had an amazing 20 minutes struggle to get oral Baytril into his mouth this morning. He’s had it before and it was always a b*gger to do, he’s very non cooperative. It’s hard to tell what amount goes into him and what amount is smeared on me, the towel and his fur. Got a follow up appointment at the vets on Friday evening.

I get the feeling that if the polyp/s regrow then it may be best to put him down then, the vet indicated that I’d have to decide what’s best for him and how much I’m willing to put him through. I guess that means he would be veering towards putting him down rather than doing another op. I’ll have to keep my fingers crossed that this op has given him an extra 6 months or so. Oh and my work mates think I’m crazy for spending £112 on an op, they keep saying they’re only £12 from the pet shop and that I should just get some more.

Glad he's doing well! Have you got any critical care or similar? It may be helpful to get some extra fibre into him if his poos are small.

I know what you mean about people thinking you're mad. I'm off to pay over £100 to see a specialist before even getting any treatment. If I hear "but it's a guinea pig" one more time, I'm gonna pop!

I think force feeding would have to be the very last resort considering how long it took me to get that Baytril into him. I think he’s best left alone rather than getting him stressed.

Sue, please ignore those work colleagues - you know you've done the right thing, and that's all that matters. If there's a different decision to make further down the line .... well, don't even think about that now.

I hope he'll pick up with his eating and pooping; I suppose if he's being picky with food right now, just give him lots of whatever he will eat.

Still sending "get well" thoughts to the boy.

Mine are happy to eat it out of a bowl, or off a spoon.

Thanks Sue G.

@ Amanada - I'm getting my mum to try and tempt him by waving food at his face later today when she goes to check on him.

ARRRGH I got the same thing at work when I spent £150 on emergency vets etc. when Picchu was sick. Right down the the erroneous £12 price tag. >< Obviously no mates of mine, really. Claws crossed for your little one's recovery.

Ha ha - at the waving food in his face. Do you feed nuggets? If you soak them in water and offer them on a spoon and leave the bowl in his cage he might eat for himself. Is he on metaclopromide? As when a piggie is ill after an op it is invaluable at stimulating the gut and increasing their appetite. Most of my piggies needed hand feeding post op intitially just for about 3days usually. Is there any piggie bank members nearby that could help??

No hasn’t got gut stimulants. Or probiotics, my vet practice never give probiotics out when they dispense Baytril. Although I’ve never had a problem before when the rodents have had Baytril.

Actually his nuggets was one of the things he was eating a lot of last night. It was mainly the soft fruit and veg he was avoiding for some reason. I think he’ll be fine. I’ll monitor him tonight but I suspect he’ll be getting more back to normal throughout today. If not I’ll do my worrying tomorrow.

He’s looking good, think he’ll be fine. He’s not eating his favourite tomatoes still and is being a bit picky but he’s definitely eating enough of other foods and drinking lots and looks happy. Getting Baytril in him has been tricky and guessing the dose cos half of what I attempt to get in ends up down his fur so I end up giving more and more cos I don’t think he’s had his .3ml. Got the post op check tonight. I can’t see anything obviously wrong with his ear but he still must find it tender and irritating as he still shakes his head all over when you try to look.

What a relief that he seems on the mend now. Healing wheeks and whiffles of wellness to your little boy for a speedy recovery.

His ear may be itching slightly as it heals, too (hence the head shaking).

But generally it sounds like he's doing well, which is a great relief for you. Good luck at the vet check-up tonight.

Update: - My fudge coloured rodent is looking great. Over the weeks he’s started to not even shake his head around when I inspect inside his dodgy ear, couldn’t ask for better than that. The vet during surgery had thought he’d seen another polyp further down the ear canal but wasn’t sure, maybe there wasn’t another one afterall.

Will be keeping an eye out though. & he isn’t doing big splatters of snot/blood when sneezing too.

Its a shame your vet didn't think to look further into the suspected other polyp while your "rodent" was under GA.

And the blood was not coming from sneezing anyway, it was VERY highly likely to be from urine!

No, he was sneezing blood. I saw him do it. Think on another thread we decided it was a burst blood vessel and nothing much to worry about. & I mentioned it at the vets and they said not to worry.

It wasn’t the vets fault that he couldn’t inspect the ear canal properly. The big polyp totally filled the ear canal and as soon as he cut it out it filled with blood almost instantly. He only got a quick glimpse down there when the big polyp came out at which point he thought he saw another lump but wasn’t sure, and he got another vet to try and look but due to all the blood down there neither could see anything. & at the post-op check he wouldn’t have been able to see down there as he was still doing all the headshaking still.

It's growing back, noticed it getting bigger at Christmas time.

But it doesn't seem to orinate from down inside the ear canal on a long thread like I thought polyps were supposed to be like, this time it's just growing upwards from the side of his ear canal and it looks a bit crusty in one area.

Can't really see good from the pics but it's looking like a nastursium seed.

All you can do is take him back to a better vet. How is walking wig?

I don't blame my vet for it growing back, he said it might or a new one/s form.

Walking Wig became a little terror over Christmas for 2 or 3 days, I think me replacing the banana boxes for new unpeed on ones set him off cos he wouldn't leave Fudge alone and was harrassing him constantly. Luckily all has settled down now and there's peace again. I was thinking I'd have to seperate them permanently.

That all sounds normal for boars. You only need to separate if blood is drawn. One is always going to be the dominant one.
