white pee

I know white pee is mostly just caused by calcium but I feed my guinea pigs a low calcium diet. The pee is not griddy in texture so i'm not too worried but I don't understand why so much of their pee is white. Like a lot of it is. There are tons of white pee stains on the puppy pads, more then usual. Is it normal for them to have a ton of white pee or is this something to worry about? I dont feed them spinach or green beans or anything super high in calcium so I'm a tad confused.

The stains might have turned white and the pee might not be white. Do you use fleece bedding?
Also- if your really worried I would call the vet.

From what I gather, I think white pee stains are the norm, it does mean that the kidneys are working well to expell excess calcium in their diet. If it’s gritty then that’s more likely that they may have a problem or just getting too much calcium in their diet. They do need some calcium to maintain healthy bone and teeth etc

I agree. I feed my piggies some spinach once a week xx

That is also my understanding - White pee means that calcium is being removed and gritty is when you need to take action

Please make sure that:
- your low calcium diet is not just restricted to veg. In fact, a piggy generally gets more calcium via the water and pellets than veg.
- a diet too low in calcium can result in further loss of it.
- have your piggy vet checked in case something has gone amiss with the complex process of calcium absorption. It can also indicate a cystitis.
