HI all

I know that this comes up alot and i know what it is, just want your guys advice. Scruffy when he wees is leaving so many white spots and on his fleece blankets its leaving a big load of chalky stuff - are these crystals? I am worried hes getting too much calcium and hes going to get bladder stones. Thing is Max and him have the same diet and Max's isnt like that so much.

They are on excel pellets, they have the below:

Daily ( nearly)

Cos Lettuce/Round Lettuce
Celery
Melon

3/4 times a week

Greens
Carrot
Pak Choi

2/3 times a week

Dill
Corriandor

They have dried herbs from boredom breakers and dust free hay.

They dont like too many vegetabvles so diet is limited as so fussy!

Can anyone advise?!?!

Thanks in advance.

The diet sounds ok to me Emily, it includes the sort of things I give my gang. The only thing on your list I don't feed my lot is "greens" i.e. cabbage, brocolli, spring greens, kale or parsley as these tend to be from the higher spectrum. I try to avoid veg that is very high in calcium due to my stone piggies. I also include green pepper, dwarf beans, basil and cucumber.

How much do the boys drink? I find that my poor drinkers are the ones that seem to leave the chalky deposits. I always wash the pigs veggies and tend to leave them fairly wet - again increases the liquid they get.

Like you, mine have the odd dried herb or different hays to vary their diet. Hope that helps.:)

Thanks for replying Sandra.

I tend to give spring greens and brocolli. they hate cucumber, pepper, anything i havent mentioned tob e honest! they rarely have kale as i know all above are high in calcium.

Its funny you say about the water because its the opposite. Scruffy drinks more than Max and he is the one with the problem. It is getting quite bad and i just want to get it right!

Do you live in a 'hard water' area? If so might be worth giving them bottled water for a while and see if this makes any difference.
Your vet should be able to test a sample of the sediment/crystals and once you know the composition you can perhaps work out what the likely causes are.
Best of luck

thansk, i didnt think of that, yes i do but i have had piggies for 18 years and never had this with any of them, I might try this or use brita flitered water.

I just dont want him getting stones!

I forgot to mention Emily that I also use filtered water for the pigs, I have done since all our problems started - not sure if it makes any difference, but it can't do any harm.

Thanks Sanda. i left my water filter at my exs house so going to invest in another one i think, just for the boys. We've always had one, but at the moment havent got round to getting a new one.
