Hi,

I read on here a while ago that white stains from their wee on the fleece meant something....? Is this ok or is it something to worry about? thanks.

ok thank you for replying. how do i correct this? what should or shouldnt i be feeding them as i am obviously doing something wrong :(

The white stains you are seeing are calcium deposits from their urine. As long as they aren't bigger than I'd say a five pence coin you shouldn't worry to much. Foods high in calcium are things such as Alfalfa Hay or Alfalfa based pellets, are you feeding any of these? This website shows all types of vegetables and the amount of calcium they contain, are you feeding any with a high calcium content/ http://www.guinealynx.info/diet_vegs.html

As long as the stain doesn't have a gritty texture I think it's nothing to worry about, just excess calcium excreted in the urine. Some foods are high in calcium so it may be an idea to avoid these for the time being. Piggie Life has added the link for these :)

Looking at the chart our Piggys don't have any of the high calcium veg's

thank you all so much for your replys, i would say they are about a 10p size and approx 6-8 on the whole fleece, its one big fleece. looking at the chart the only thing i feed them with high calicum is watercress, and the alfalfa timothy hay so will cut that out and i havent noticed any texture to it, just colouring.

thank you all so much for your help.

It is just the calcium in their diet from any veg etc. I it being white is ok. Most rabbits and guineas have wee that has a slight milky colour to it. It's not completely clear. It's when it gets gritty or sludgy that you should start to worry as that can mean way too much calcium in their diet and it is building up and might cause stones.

In the chart i am looking at the calcium content. but what does calcium: phosphorus ratio mean? do i need to look at that or just the calcium content?

Ideally you need to look at the ratio, but it can get very complicated. Basically, you need to have the right balance of phosphorus to calcium or there will be imbalances that can lead to health problems, e.g. bone development can be affected or bladder stones developed.

wow thank you that is so much easier than trying to work it out for yourself as it does look very complicated. going to study this now and make a shopping list for next week :)
