I took my mother out today to a garden centre I'd never been to before and they had a pet section. You know where this is going, I'm sure, but given that I've rescued animals out of similar situations and it was both pigs and rabbits, and therefore close to my heart, I don't think I can let this one stand. Who would be the best organisation to report them to? Is it still the RSPCA?

Honestly, it was horrendous. 1 foot x 2 feet (IF THAT) tanks stacked against the wall, most of them with 2 or 3 pigs in, no hay, no food, nothing to chew on, nothing to hide in, just wood shavings. A pig and a rabbit together in a cage that was I guess a passable size but OUTSIDE in biting cold. The worst one, though, was a single male pig in a tank, alone. No hay, no toys, he looked so sad it was painful to walk away from but I'm not in a position to take another lad on and I really don't want to encourage the place.

I absolutely intend to report them to someone, but I'm wondering if RSPCA is the best option?

Definitely report to the RSPCA X

It's so wrong that lovely animals should be kept like that in a garden centre. I'm sure the plants are in better conditions than that. So wrong & awful . Please complain/ report xx Do let us know how you get on x

Actually just discovered I could do the RSPCA report online, so I just did. I'm hoping they get back to me with some resolution, but I'm sure it's going to take time. God it was horrible, I so wanted to bring that lone boar home but it's just not possible, sadly. What worries me is that they also appear to have an aquarium section I didn't look in because I didn't realise it was tucked in round a corner. I slightly dread to think what state that was in having seen the mammals.

Oh no....once again....dreadful. well done for doing the RSPCA report online. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you x

Well done for reporting this! If this is how they keep their animals they probably don't give the correct advice to new owners either.

Well done you for having the courage of your convictions. You may not hear back though. I reported to the SSPCA a while back about two piggies they had reserved for adoption which were appearing on a 'for sale' site. I never heard back, but the reserved flag disappeared and they were back up for adoption, so you may have to figure out for yourself what action has been taken.

Please phoNe RSPCA ASAP! Sounds dreadful.
I once reported a park that had a shed full of rabbits and hamsters etc stacked up in rows above each other and a good few were filthy and with out water! Phoned SSPCA and when I returned in 2 weeks to check on the situation that shed was empty so they’d obviously attended and cleared them out.

Bit of an update for everyone, RSPCA were predictably unhelpful. I've had several experiences with them like this before, because their hands are sadly tied by the laws of licensing to sell animals. Essentially they said precisely what I'd expected them to, which was that it was the council's responsibility first and foremost, they could do nothing unless the council called them in to remove the animals.

Spoke to the council, I've been passed between four departments thus far and it seems the lady I need to speak to isn't in the office today, so I've left a message and I'll try her again tomorrow to see if I can get through to someone there. I have a sneaking feeling that they're going to drag this out and fail those animals, though.

It has been suggested I try naming and shaming online, but I'd much rather this was taken down official routes first, if possible, for obvious reasons. For now, I've done all I can at least, but this stands as yet another example of why animal licensing laws in this country are in dire need of a review. There is no excuse for this kind of thing happening in a country with otherwise reasonable animal welfare standards. The law needs to start recognising that ALL animals being traded as a commodity have the right to good care and reasonable space according to the RSPCA's guidelines, and for that care to have been legally enforced, be they a rodent, a dog, a horse or even a fish. The double standards on this infuriate me.

Sorry for the rant, this is a pet topic of mine after many years of rescuing animals of all kinds from appalling situations.

Ps. When I got back to my car that first visit I discovered my daughter had sneaked out the hamster that had been sitting in a cage with broken wires jutting out etc! She’d put her in her hat!
Not to be recommended of course!

Sorry, just had to add that this made me laugh! Bless your daughter, clearly has a good heart :))

A pet shop above a garden centre had been reported time & time again. The council shut it down. They then said they could reopen after a year, as they had learnt there lesson. Within 2 months they were permanently closed.
1/ l would ring them daily & tell them. a/ your going to log, every phone call you make to them & keep copies of every letter you send. Make sure from now you send daily letters.
2/ Also the animals are being kept in unsuitable conditions. Which is cruel to the animals.
3/ Tell the council you want continuity, & you want to be assigned 1 person to liaison with.
4/ if something doesn't get done, you feel you are obliged to involve other people, the press, petitions, etc.
5/ Your concern is for the animals only, & feel the council is aggravating the situation, by delaying following this up quickly.
6/ They are not putting the welfare of the animals first.

That’s terrible that RSPCA won’t help. Why not try a word with your local newspaper?
