Hey peeps....so I was wondering who has the oldest guinea pig on the forum?

also wonder if the person with the oldest guinea pig has pet insurance or just saves a kitty aside just in case

I had an 8 year old.
I have 2 year olds now.
I had a 9 year old dwarf rainbow fish. They are only supposed to live til 5

My pair of boys (if you’re talking about Neon Dwarfs) are 7, they can live much longer than 5 though, most Rainbows can live well over a decade!

My Jess is an oldie but definitely not the oldest on forum (at 7yrs and 4 months).

I think @Wiebke has had some very senior piggies, over 8 years old! And @alpacasqueak 's Jess is quite an elderly lady I believe, hanging in there and still enjoying life with some complex health issues that flare up every so often... my oldest girls are about 4 now but still very sprightly (waddling is sprightly says Jezzy floof, if you do it fast for a coriander treat!)

The two wouldn’t be connected

My piggies are just over two years old, I also have a 7 year old rabbit. I don’t have pet insurance but do have a vet fund saved up

I think its amazing that now piggies routinely live until 5 at least and maybe even 7 or 8... when I first had a piggy 35 years ago the expected lifespan was 2, back in the bad old days when they lived alone in 6sqft hutches and ate muesli because nobody knew any better!

Yes pet insurance often wont cover seniors, or recurring health issues, so has no real impact on lifespan. Good vet care if needed is obviously essential, but a good diet and housing and social interactions are so important for a long, happy and healthy life!

There should be a kitty whether they’re young or old. I don’t have the oldest. My boys just turned 3 recently.

Really? On the site I researched on, the max age was 5.
That's why I thought Buddy was super old.

Yes sorry I didn’t mention then, no insurance for Jess!
My almost 14yr old cats however do, even if I’ve paid all these years and never claimed!

I know isn’t it amazing @PigglePuggle, my old silver fox Trevor lived to four and that seemed great at the time (20yrs ish ago!). Also munching his muesli and way too many carrots and dandelions!

I have the bank of mum and dad if my girls need anything.

Both piggies in my avatar picture, baby Tegan and teddy Nerys lived to around 8 years old; Tegan's aunt Ffwlbri and her playmates, sisters Heulwen and Hedydd, also reached that age last summer when all four passed away within three months of each other. Considering that the two sisters came from a really bad uncontrolled free.

My pensioner lady Calli lived to celebrate her 9th birthday but our first family piggy back in the 70ies, Wuschel, came close to his 10th birthday!

It is rare that guinea pigs live to 10 years and even rarer that they live beyond.

My old herd mostly lived between 7-9 years, my oldest ever was my boy Fudge, he was 11ish when we lost him.

But that was a long time ago now.. my current oldest are only 4 years old, although they're 1/4 cuy who only live 2-3 years so I'm not expecting them to get particularly elderly, but I will be happy to be proven wrong! :)

He’s definitely old! You should be proud! Do you just have him?
Mine hang around with my Lake Kutubu Rainbows, looking cute and causing nowhere near as much trouble! They’re lovely little fish.

thats really interesting to learn

just shows how advanced we've become when it comes to animal care due to research and science

yea i did read that for guinea pigs its classed as an exotic animal so you need exotic pet insurance, that was something that really threw me

No, he was with 3 other dwarfs, 4 boesmani and another kind I still have. He thought he was a molly though because he used to hang about with my group of 16. He died a few years ago. I loved him so much.

so 8 seems to be classed as a senior age hen it comes to piggies?
