who knew neutering a piggie costs £60! :o

I am worried about the operation as it is and now defo am put off by the price, and to think i saw a perfect little girly x) in adoption centre at p@h. she looked so lonely. I wanted her to be a wife to Louie :(

I am so tempted to just go and get her :(:0

That price sounds about right to me

But he would love a wifey!

or theres always boar dating if you dont want to put him through the op?

It cost me £50 just over 3 years ago, so that's about right. Ring around and see if you can get it done somewhere else for a little less.

he has a brother, but they are separated at the moment, going through 'teenage years', and they dont seem to be so keen of each other. Theres a massive weight difference even tho they are siblings and one gets so stressed out by all the chasing, I dont know what to do right now :(

ah so pricey! I did ring several but all same price. I dont want to find cheapest, just in case they arent great. Really hate the thought of him being operated on tho :(

I am no expert but until blood has been drawn its just normal "fighting" over domincance.

You may end up with two pairs of piggies , but with proper boar dating the chance of them falling out is unlikely.

That is well within the normal range of a standard neutering op (other ops can be much more epxensive, actually). Even with a nuetering op, you would face another 6 weeks post op wait until Louis would be safe to go with a sow.

Please go for a male companion if you do not want to pay that (and more, if you run into complications). If you want to make sure that your boy is well bonded and less likely to fall out during the hormonal months, you can look around whether you have a guinea pig rescue within your reach that offers boar bonding, so Louis can make the choice who he gets on with.

PS: I would strongly recommend that you put some money aside in a "piggy bnank" every week for vety cost; that way you are not caught out if you run into expensive treatment when one of your piggies fall seriously ill.

thats a great idea!

Thank you for advise :) , I think its more the fact i am worried about complications, and using the cost as an excuse not to put him through it.

Could anyone suggest a rescue that would attempt to re-bond the 2 current boys? Or dont they do that?

I was quoted £90 by one vet! Needless to say I went for the one that charged £50 and was more highly recommended :)

As far as I know, they don't do that; they only bond single boars with one of theirs.

Whether boars get on ultimately depends on the character combination, and all tricks in the trade can't change or disguise that fact in the long run.

Wiebke's right about the piggy bank. £60 is a drop in the ocean when it comes to a lot of guinea pig slave's vets bills! rolleyes

I offer a rebonding service, along side the piggy dating service. I am on stop here at the rescue just now but will be reopening at the beginning of March, all being well in the piggy world.

You are welcome to ring me then to discuss the procedure and options should they not rebond.

I had my boy Cyrus neutered in September. It cost £55 including meds and post op checks up. However Cyrus developed an abscess and the cost of the emergency vets treatment and subsequent taxis to and from the vets ended up taking me to nearly £250 for his op!:{........Cyrus had been nibbling the wounds and had opened one slightly and although it was glued back, he developed an abscess on that wound sight........Cyrus is now living a very happy life with Matilda and Sabeene and seemed oblivious to the drama surrounding his abscess and the cost to his mummy! So for us both, it was worth it.....
