Who looks after your pigs when you go away?

Hey, just wondering who looks after peoples pets when they go away? The reason I ask is because I go home to Nottingham quite often. Luckily my next door neighbours are really friendly and come round to feed my 2 and open / close the shed door everyday. However, I realise that there may be an odd occasional time when they may not be able to so I need some more ideas :-\
 
My sister usually does but my neighbour has said she will as well so I'm covered lol.
If both of them were away then my lot would go and stay with my mummy lol x
 
I'm going away in the summer so the girls will be going to my mum/dad's - which is really good as they have a garden so think they might get out a for while. They're stuck indoors in my flat here.
 
I've got a really good neighbour. I look after her cat when she goes away but I feel embarassed asking her as I have 8 guineas, 4 rabbits, 2 chinchillas & 1 gerbil! We've been known to have separate holidays & now my kids are teenagers I sometimes leave them behind to look after the herd. When that fails, I've built up a network of other neighbours & friends etc always leaving pages of written instructions & emergency contact numbers. I haven't got any family living near us to help. I feel really lucky to have so many people I can rely on!

am with you on that one. we don't have hoildays and it would be a waste of time as would be too worried over our fur babies to enjoy ourselves. :smitten: :smitten:

I haven't been away since I've had this many pigs! I've found a site where you swap pet-sitting with local people with similar pets - www.petsitterswap.com/ - but I haven't tried it yet and would rather have someone I know. I trust my neice, so when I'm away on my training course in August she will probably house-sit and pet-sit.

my dad looks after mine ;D if not I have to stay home, or I do know someone that'll do boarding for me if I really need it. The family live too far away. My friends and neighbours aren't good with animals ;D
 
My niece has recently moved up here to Scotland and she will look after the piggies for me. The cats will go to the cattery together - they are fine there.

My mother in law will feed the fish. She has to sleep in our house as it is in the grounds of the Hotel and someone has to sleep on the premises when we are away.

i Have three fiends that if i don't ask to look after the Horde i get told off! :o 98)
they sort it out amongst them selves to pop round each day to check on them they will get a shock in June with 29!
But they will be out side by then!
Less mess to clean out!

Thats the problem I have. My family live 2 hours drive away and we haven't made loads of friends yet ? :-\
 
I dont go away either I would worry constantly.
I am actually looking after someone elses at the moment who has already been away 3 times this year, its quite a responsibility looking after someone elses pets. I wont be doing it again as it is quite stressful!

You could try a designated guinea pig boarding house type thing? think it is about £2.00 per day per piggy depending on the area... or try Pals4pets? perhaps call your local vet to see if they could suggest anyone...

I think trying to find somone that you know to do it is obvioulsy the best way to go about things... perhaps they can live in your place whilst you are away? they get free board etc so it benefits all (especially if they still live at home etc, they may be itching to get out for a bit!) :smitten:

I'm in Lymm in Cheshire so not too bad but there would be quite a bit to sort out.
 
When I do go on hols I usually go somewhere thats about 20 mins away from where I live, so that I can call back each day to feed and check on them. My friends think I am 98) but I worry about otherwise.
 
For the piggies I used a bunny boarding place oncely had two piggies then. Now I have eight so a pet sitting service will be used ;)

Yep I went along to visit them a couple of months ago. They have good facilities and seem to look after the animals well, the only problem for me was the price per day per pair of pigs is (around) £4.50 - which is slightly expensive ( xx0 xx0 xx0) considering the amount of pigs I have! They are bedded on sawdust etc but I'm sure they'd be open to suggestion if you provided your own bedding.
I do know somewhere else that will take piggies, I'll pm you details if you like :)
 
Where possible I prefer to have a friend or family member come to my house and look after my girls. I write up a list of things that have to be done each done, and prepare baggies of veggies before I leave. I also leave about $50 with a menu for them to go and buy more veggies if they run out.

The other option is boarding them at the vets which is ok but it means that they have to live in a small cage for a week!
 
My mum comes over and feeds and spends time with them! I dont think that I could trust anyone else with them. :)

I didn't think it was quite that far but its still probably too far for pet sitting. Oh well.
 
Starla - thanks for the info. It's always good to know just in case. I kept meaning to go round and have a look there when I was living in Gloweth, but never got round to it. There was that place on the Helston-Truro road not far from the Norway Inn, but they have closed down. It always looked a nice place.
