Why do some landlords threaten eviction when they find out their tennant has piggies? its not like they're a dog that will wreck everything-how ungracious!:o

Was there information in the tennants agreement about pets?

I guess you should always check before you move in... Heard so many stories of people having to rehome their animals because they didn't check this before :(

I do agree though, an animal in a cage would not cause damage like a dog or cat possibly could.

I really hope you reason with him This is exactly why I would never ever get housed under a landlord they're *******s

We live in a rented house and our contract states that pets are not allowed. However, we have 2 gerbils, 1 hamster, 2 goldfish. 2 guinea pigs who live in our out house and then of course the 2 rats who we have every weekend and school holiday. The property agents come round every 3 months to inspect the property and nothing has ever been said about our pets. When we nearly rescued a cat (it fell through in the end) we asked the agents and they said we could have a cat if we paid a deposit which seemed fair. I think it just depends on the individual. Could you not offer to pay a deposit just in case your pigs did any damage (not that they would) but may be that could be your compromise.

I think it's only polite when you're living in someone else's house to ask them before you get a pet. Most tenancy agreements have a clause prohibiting you from keeping pets without permission. Note the "without permission". When we rented we got our letting agent to ask the owner and they had no problems with us keeping the pigs at all.

yeah, and back when we first rented we asked for permission, got it, brought the pets over from germany - and then some months down the line landlord changed his mind and wanted us to get rid of them!
We even did ask him back then if we needed it in writing, to which he said "oh, why bother. My word is my bond". Yeah right. You live and learn, I suppose....

From that experience on now we are getting EVERYTHING in writing...

I'm a landlord and my tenants have two cats and a dog - the most important thing for me is to have good tenants who pay the rent on time and look after the house, which they do :))

Some people, when they become a landlord, get a bit power crazy and let it all go to their head which is very sad.

I totally agree, G.Pigs are not going to cause any damage, I think your landlord is being a bit petty to be honest.

Not sure what the point of my post was ..... very tired lol

I think having animals in rented accomadation depends on how well the animals are cared for & whether, like you say, they will wreck the house or not. Try and reach a comprimise with him.

I agree.

My tenancy agreement stated that i wasnt allowed pets unless I had permission. I rung her first to ask, she said yes.
The reason some landlords go so wild over this is animals can make alot of mess. They have no idea of the type of person who is moving in and some people just cant be bothered to clean up after their animals properly. So its people like this who ruin it for the rest of us and this is why it is the way it is.

Miss Magpie, you were lucky then. And if I was you I would not just count on this "telephone ok", and get the agreement in writing also.

Because I would not wish it on anyone to get into a situation like ours was...

I think i was misleading with my thread-i'm not in the situation-i've just read that this is the reason for a lot of pigs needing new homes, (was just having a rant!) i agree you need to check before you move in-but as it was said in an earlier post, as long as they are good tennants and the house is looked after etc-and yes some landlords do go a bit OTT where pets are concerned.

I think at the end of the day its down to lack of knowledge. Some landlord's may think of pets as being dirty/smelly so don't want them in their property.

Unfortunately it would have been stated in the contract when somene takes on the property whether the landlord would allow them to have pets or not and legally they have to oblige by the contract or leave. It is someone else's property at the end of the day and they are trying to safeguard it.

I see nothing wrong with it as it is up to the individual landlord. I work in a Housing Association and we allow tenant's to have whatever pets they want as long as they are not a nuisance to their neighbours and they clean up their mess.

I rent and my lease says no pets - I wrote to the landlord asking permission for 2 x small furries and was told that wasn't a problem as long I didn't keep them outside as we have too many foxes round here.

When the landlord popped round to do his check the other week he was very impressed to see the piglets in their cage in the lounge - his only concern was about potential soiling on the laminate flooring. We showed him the set up we have for when the piglets are in their run in the lounge and he was perfectly happy that no urine would stain the boards or soak between them (not sure how much he thinks they pee!).

At the end of the day it's not my house it's his and he can set all the rules he likes about how we live in the house - if we don't accept them he'll find someone else who will.

You have just restored my faith in landlords lol

I can't even begin to tell you how awful my last one was. Some of you may remember.

I told the agents about pigs and they said fine. The landlord came down one day to see me, pigs were out in indoor run, and he was fine about it.

Then the agents did their 3 month check. I wasn't there - nor were pigs,as we had gone back to my parents as I was poorly. Agents wrote me a foul letter about the pigs being indoors. They knew all along they were indoor pigs. They then demanded a double deposit, and that I have the house prefessionally cleaned and de-flea-ed whan I leave. I said they could not change the agreement of the tenancy as the circumstances had not changed. They then inflamed the landlord with their hysteria. Everything got very nasty. I sent the pigs back to my parents as I was afraid the agents would come round when I was out and hurt them. In all the pigs lived there about 6 weeks as I did not have them there to start with while I was getting sorted out.

Because I refused the ridiculous demands I was booted out. Luckily my father is a solicitor and he dealt with the whole thing for me. He even discovered that the agents had in fact acted illegally with the way they were keeping my original deposit. He informed them that if it went to court, the landlord (whose repsonsibility it was )would have to pay three times a months rent to me because his agents had acted in this way. That shut them up. I am sure my dad would not mind advising anyone here with a similar problem.

When I took on my new place I asked the landlord for written permission for pigs to be inside. I would advise this to anyone.

well done you! a good job your dad was able to help you out-i'm sure others must have been in similar situations but probably didn't even think to challenge it, or didn't realise they could-thats awful what they did-but hey-one nil to the good guys!
