Hi all i have just mastered the use of fleese then i adopted woody from the rspca i have had him 2 days each day i have changed the fleese it stinks after a few hours now i know boars can be a bit smelly so if i change my bedding what would be the best should i go back to newspaper and hay he is a smelly little man bless him x

I'd say stick with the fleece for a wee bit longer, as a boy and just moving in he's probably marking everything in sight claiming his new territory if you will, he should settle down. Now this is only a guess on my part, I'm sure other more experienced with boars will be along to advice about bedding and such and what suits boars.

Good luck hun.

Some boars are stinkier than others! I know of one rescue boar who had to be an outside piggy because he stank like a skunk! I would give it a few more days and hope he calms down is he with another piggie pal?

How big is the cage? Sometimes if you have a male its better to have a bigger cage because it can decrease the smell somewhat.

Newspaper and hay wont really decrease a boar smell, I am not a big fan of just newspaper and hay for bedding though to be honest.

I would stick with the fleece, although you have to understand males do tend to be stinkier in general - I know my male was, his poops were bigger and stinkier than the girls and he always needed mucking out more. I should imagine if he wasnt neutered the problem could even be worse if he got impacted, I know my male stinked when he started needing emptying lol

Have you got some towel or similar absorbant bedding underneath the fleece?

I can sympathise, I have two boars - albeit intact ones - on fleece and they do not keep a tidy home. Their fleece is the messiest of all, they're so not houseproud. Not like most of my other pigs. :))

Congratulations on adopting Woody, I considered him when I was looking for a neutered boar. He's lovely. :)

Surely you don't mean Errol and Elijah?! :(|):(|):(|)

I have two boars on fleece and I know what you mean.

I recently (about a month ago I think it was) changed my boys cage and they now have a much bigger area and for some reason it doesn't seem to smell as much.

I hoover poops up everyday and they have trays lined with newspaper and hay, where they tend to wee the most which we change everyday too and we don't really notice much smell to be honest.

I hope you manage to sort out something that works well for you and woody. Congratualtions on adopting him by the way. x

Have you considered that Woody is most probably on hormone overload right now and busy marking his territory wityh his hormone laden pee?

He will calm down soon!

Unfortunately, I most certainly do. Messiest pigs I've ever known. They don't keep themselves clean and they don't keep their house clean. Typical boys!

(No offence to anyone male reading this thread...)
