Why do people think I shouldn't have a guinea pig?

PiggiesX, I know it's not what you really want, but is there a rescue close by that you can volunteer at for a few hours a week after school or at weekend? Not only would you be doing something amazing for needy piggies, but you would have all the pleasure of learning so much about them, how to care for them knowledgably, learn to assess behaviour, health issues, the reasons why so many are given away etc? Then if the time comes when you want to start seeing boys and going out etc you can alter your time accordingly and won't have to worry about giving up your piggies yourself because you just do not have the time because your prorities will change as time goes on? Just a thought :)

that is exactly what i said boureki, to do work experience at a shelter/rescue centre. that way she can show her mum she is serious and that she is learning about them.
and clare i am sorry to hear about your father, :'( :'( :'( mine passed away before i was 2 so sadly i never knew him. :'( :'( :'( so piggyx if you are serious about guinea pigs go to a rescue centre/ shelter and get as much experience as you can, stop nagging your mum, look after your hamsters, do your homework etc show her how mature you are and your mum may surprise you. while your mum is thinking about it show her how much you have changed and grown up you are. it is up to you. either way good luck and love your mum as she is the only one who'll have. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thats another thing i forgot to say, the vet bills! I have one pig who just seems to attract illness, he has had most things they can have and not only has he cost me between £600-£1000 for emergency vets, xrays, injections, medication etc, it has caused so much upset. At 13 i could not have nursed a sick piggy and fed it every few hours via syringe, faught with it to get medicine down it, given it swim therapy every day, massages, eye drops and flushed abscesses out. Its very upsetting to have to do things to help an animal when you know it hurts them or makes them uncomfortable. and you feel so helpless. Its great when its all going well, id have hardly seen my vets if i hadnt got Ralfie, the other 4 are healthy pigs but if something goes wrong its heartbreaking. Dont get me wrong i love him to bits and couldnt be without him but take last night for example, i didnt go to my mates birthday party because i knew Ralfie needed medicine and syringed food and i couldnt leave him. You need to take this into account. Even though I'm 18 my mum still gets upset and helps when Ralfie is sick because even though she doesnt have to, she wants to because its upsetting her daughter and she cares about the pigs, so as much as you say it would be your responsibility, it would be your mums by default because you're her daughter.

I do agree with jnenbnb, is your mum willing to help look after them?

As I already said, I'm 14 and although the pigs are mine they are my parents too. Before I got them I made sure that my parents were willing to pay vet bills etc, I also have money saved for vet bills just in case. My mum also agreed that if one was to become ill and needed medication/syringe feeding/etc then she would do that whilst I wasn't home and stuff like that. You should save up some money for vet bills so that this money is saved and that's a weight off your mums mind. Ask whether she would be willing to look after them if you were away from home for a few days, or they needed syringe feeding and stuff whilst you're at school. If she would then I see no problem personally O0

I know that my parents would be willing to do pretty much anything for my pigs so I'm in a good situation really.

I know I havn't got piggies yet, but when I first got my rabbits, I asked my mum if she was willng to care for them, if I wasnt there, and if she would pay for vet bills ect.

i know alot of this isnt what you want to hear.

i work with students and they nag and whine and annoy the hell out of me...but thankfully i'm not mum!

the thing is, i think you know what we're going to say- so what is the point in asking us. i waited 10 years to get my guinea pigs with my mums permission and yes she loves them amazingly but i wont let her clean them out because that is my responsibility, or pay for my vet treatment for them or even the spot on drops and things because that was my responsibility in getting them. i thought *when i was young* that guinea pigs would be easy to care for...and they kinda are. untill they get sick and then they go down hill so fast that there is nothing you can do...not only do you need to ask your self if you can look after them, have enough time for them, have enough money for the bedding, dry food, hay, fresh veg...but can you mentally deal with something which depends on you to feed it, give it clean water, to clean it...can you mentally deal if something terrible happens like thats happened to popcorn and clare. it hurt so much when i had to have xavier put to sleep i know its still only 2 weeks ago but i feel guilty.

am not trying to scare you! just trying to point out that while hammys may be kinda easy to look after doing that whole sleeping all day thing then being awake while you're in bed...guinea pigs arent like that. the number of times i've had to check online what things meant is mental! i did so much research and i still need more. *shrug* just dont make the wrong decision and end up having to give away your guinea pig as well as the crabs...i like to think that guinea pigs have feelings, get upset if am not there talking to them when i usually am *yes i'm soft!* but they certainly know who feeds them! and i know xavier loved me...dont pester your mum, and really i know your not going to listen to us because we;re not saying the things you want to hear but dont make another guinea pig need rescuing.

I wasn't allowed any guineas when i was younger or rabbits, dad had 2 cats for as long as i remember they died when i was 16 and we had yorkies they where lovely but as for a pe of my own it was not allowed,
so when i moved out i went out and got 2 guineas ;D and have never looked back

I have to wait untill I'm 14 which will be in june because of insurance, Sadly I don't know any ones with GPs that would let me do volunteer work. I only have St Francais and Blue Cross. Blue cross wont take me untill I'm 16 and St Francias don't have any GPs Only rabbits, Dogs, Cats, and Other residents that arn't for sale.

My mum did say that once we have settled down that I might be able to Rescue some, because we are going to get a huge extension on our house that means that we might have a spare room so I can let them roam free.

My mum is at home also. If something bad happened she would help me out. She loves guinea pigs like the next person. She still holds my hammies and Gives them attention as well as I do.

My mum knows that if I need help she'll be there for me and help me. A Couple days ago I was worried about toby with the loss of hair down his back. So I'm going to take him to the vets as soon a possible. I know I won't make another GPs Needing another home, Once I give a Animal a Home I'll stick to it and Make sure I give them the best live ever.

Sorry but i dont know what you're asking from us then? i thought your mum said no? if she said yes then just get some whats the problem? you say you'll stick with the animal but you gave your hermit crabs up because they were too much and you had other things to do.

They needed constant spraying. Like every hour. I wasn't home every hour. Like with guinea pigs people have to go to school and work. I was saying that you were trying to put me off.

We are just saying that you need to research a lot, you obviously didnt with the crabs otherwise you would have known they'd need spraying that often. I'm not syaing anymore :-X wether or not you get pigs is up to you we cant stop you.

what i don't understand is why you posted this thread? as you have no intention of listening to what we say. nor do you have any respect for your mother! your mum said no to you having guinea pigs, though when older you could. but this is not good enough for you for some reason you want them now! you have posted threads where you want bunnies, and other pets, didn't have time for your crabs, which if you had researched properly you would have known this! this post has shown that you are not mature enough to have a guinea piggy, i would stick with your hamsters and be grateful for what you do have and wait until you grow up and have your mum's permission to have guinea piggies. a guinea pig is a living thing and needs care and time spent with it, it is not a toy! but then you won't listen so i too have given up on this. :-X :-X :-X

I'm sorry but i tottaly aggree with you i have said like many people on here that piggies need alot of researching,
like your crabs needed spraying every hour guineas need alot of attention to or they can get lonely,
i understand that you have got a hamster but they are tottaly different they need alot more care and attention, i think you should listen to your mum and us and wait until you are older wen you can take more responsibility for yourself and your pets.

I think at the end of the day, looking after guineas is hard work, I mean i find it hard work, and i am sure we all feel you should be out enjoying yourself instead of thinking O i have to clean the guineas bottles, bowls and hutches before i can go out, and i expect soon things will change for you, you will become interested in boys etc etc, and your mum probable knows this, and proable wants to wait to see how you mature and grow,

it is no disrespect to you that we all say no don't do it, it is just we all know how time consuming they can be,

Enjoy your life pets can come along later

i agree with everything you have said piggybaker, and i am sorry if i have not been polite or civil to piggyx. was just trying to get our point of view across but it felt like they were not listening. at age 13 life can change so quickly, 5 years later i was married and pregnant. even with 2 giuinea pigs and a bunny and me and hubby we find they are time consuming, hard work and at times expensive but will admit we enjoy it. sorry again if i have upset piggyx in anyway. hope in time you do get piggies and that you will know how to care for them and love them. for now enjoy life and your hamsters. hugs and cuddles to you and your hamsters. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

we will offer advise when you need it...but you're not listening to us. you're taking what we say and trying to convince us...which lets be honest is pointless.

we cant always have the things we want in life...i want to be a size 8...with perfect teeth...in a nice relationship...i want to enjoy my job... do you know how many of those things are true or easily obtainable...or things i'll even get? pretty much non of them i'll end up having...but guess what!? i deal with it.

you cant say that you'll put everything in to your guinea pigs...look at the hermit crabs...you seem to of given up far to easily on them. i had a bored guinea pig on his own and all he liked doing was sitting with me while i was on the net just so he had someone to talk to :'( can you imagine how a guinea pig would feel just being tossed aside because you had got bored, or had other things to deal with?

pets arent toys.
