why do you lot think they get mites

what is your oppinion on mites why do you think they get them do they come from the hay how do you stop them getting them i have tried everything i do think its something I'm doing but WHAT i would love to know??
 
Actually the majority of mites are on the guinea pigs all the time. Some mites can come in on hay and bedding but it tends to be that pigs who are stressed, ill or on cheap bedding end up with the most skin problems as in times of illness or stress the mites multiply and start to cause problems.
 
I get confused because some people call lice, mites, and mites, lice ? ? ? ? ?
Do you get those wriggly white things on hay? And mange mites, where do they come from

Mites and lice are two very different things.

Here's information on mites - http://www.guinealynx.com/mites.html. Mites are microscopic. You CANNOT see them with the naked eye - you need a microscope. If you can see something moving on the skin of a pig, it's not a mite.

Lice are very different and can be seen by the naked eye. They are white, tiny and wriggly. They are not particularly huge, smaller than 2mm. Information is here - http://www.guinealynx.com/lice.html

Treatment for them is also slightly different - lice do not suck blood and ivermectin injected or administered by mouth will do little for them. Mites do and will usually respond to any type of ivermectin though people seem to have most success with topical.
 
I saw this picture of a GP. He had watery eyes and Gunge in them. He had matted fur and Mites. The girl who owned them said She can't take them to the vets because she hasn't got enough money. :( Poor things.
 
when i got Cookie she already 'had' mites but the stress of a new home and bonding with two new piggies made them 'kick in' ::)
 
i got Cuzzy from P@H and I put him with my two boars not knowing anything about quarantine at that point, 2 weeks later he had mites. :-(
 
One or two of ours have had mites, and Tiger got lice! He was horrified, he is so vain. I think he was run down as we were treating him for a cold, and thats when he got the lice - nasty things.
