Why don't people who work in pet shops know anything about animals?

Why don't they know that guinea pigs should not be kept with rabbits?
Why don't they know that the end of a carrot every now and then does not constitute "fresh vegetables twice a day"?
Why don't they know that guinea pigs need a place to hide and feel safe?
Why don't they know that water should not be green and furry?

I totally agree, these things are obvious.

One of the worst things I find, why don't they give them an igloo or something, even a see through one? I know a good pet shop that does, but most don't seem to. I saw a sow with two tiny babies in a cage with no hidey house, in the middle of a pet shop once, and she was terrified. :( Trying to feed her babies out in the open like that.

I've never seen a pet shop feed any veg to guinea pigs either, not even hay (except the one good pet shop I know.)

Guinea pigs and rabbits are different species, they should know that. I just, I wish that people had to do an animal care course before working in pet shops.

Another thing, that I hate, when nobody at all in the shop knows how to sex guinea pigs (and other animals).

I'm not saying that pet shops are good, but the petshops I go to are pretty decent in terms of the things you just said. I'd say they have an OK knowledge of guinea pigs too. There are definitely some TERRIBLE petshops out there though...
