Hi everyone! I'm doing a report for my college class about my little furry friends and I just wanted people's opinions on why you chose guinea pigs as a pet, and what they do for you (such as keeping you happy when your down/ a companion)?
Any replys would be nice :)

Having guinea pigs gives me a reason to get up and just holding their warm little bodies next to me makes me feel content. They are the most amazing animals. They are so sweet and gentle that I just want to protect them.

I first got guinea pigs as I felt lonely and wanted company. They sounded ideal. I have an allergy to cats and dogs but would not have the space anyway. Having guinea pigs has totally changed my life. They are my world.

That almost brought a tear to my eye lol

Well - 'my' piggies were supposed to belong to my daughter - she is only 5. So - the reasons that I think they make a great pet for a younger child (albeit with adult supervision) are

1) they are a good size and less likely to get lost under furniture etc

2) they are not nocturnal so you get to see them be active and interesting

3) they don't often bite

4) they are also a nice size to hold - gerbils, hamsters and mice are a bit more tricky for a young child

5) the lifespan is good - it's nothing like the responsibility of a dog or cat which might go on 15 years or so and it's not as short as a gerbil/hamster. It is just right.

6) They are not 'tying' like puppies - you can still go out and the guineas will be ok for a few hours.

7) I have had piggies before and I think they are really cute.

Soz - I missed out one more reason and what they do for me/us bit

Grooming - my daughter LOVES the grooming aspect! And all the nail clipping and general fussing part.

What they do for me - ours are cuddly and I think that's the best bit for dd - but for me it's watching the interaction between them that is fascinating - I love just watching them in the cage - communicating, eating, sleeping. SO interesting!

I have grown up with guinea pigs and have found that my life was just empty without them. They are keeping me company as I'm working from home, but I don't have to feel guilty when we have a hectic day.

Guinea pigs pack so much personality into such a small cute package; I love the dynamic, rich social life that my big bonded group has. Life is never dull with piggies around!

Well I've always had a fear of dogs and as much as I adore cats my parents do not like them.

We had a guinea pig when I was younger and he was the most lovely creature ever. Sadly he died and I immediately wanted a new one. Being only about 8 years old my parents refused and that was that.

Once I reached 20, my mum came up to me and asked me if I still wanted a guinea pig -I'd been asking them the year before again- and I told her yes!

Itchy had been the best pet I'd had in the past - owning a dog, budgies, hamster, rabbits and fish in the past - but the guinea pig was the best and seemed to have the nicest personality. They didn't bite or fight, you could handle them happily.

I went out to get my new guinea pig and saw 3. I thought long and hard - for a day- and decided I wanted two of them but as I couldn't bear to leave 1 behind on his own, I wanted all 3. Luckily - as they were boars- there was only two left the next day, both red eyed whites and I bought my two boys.

Why I love guinea pigs? Their nature, they rarely bite and how loving and cute they are. Love their little squeaks.

They were the ideal pet for me and now they are my addiction and the reason I smile daily.

I feel the same as Wiebke, I've had piggies since I was a small child and I couldn't be without them. I love their little pigsonalities :)

we have always as a family had pets in the house, from hamsters, gerbils and rabbits plus cats, I had always as well been very active in trying to care for them for as long as I remember.

When I moved out and was in college I felt so empty so got two gerbils who were fabulous to have around and perfect for that time in my life, however during my first year of working life I used to babysit for a lovely couple and they had guinea pigs, I fell in love with them and how quirky they were and decided that when I was next able to, I would have guinea pigs.

So several years later I found myself stable in a job, had a great place to rent and missed having lots of animals around (had left farming by then), so the time came to get my promised guinea pigs. I loved having them around and although they were not as tame as others would like, it was a joy to finally have guinea pigs. They all sadly passed and I didnt replace them (which was a good job as we all had to move out), moved into the town and missed them greatly.

Then I realised last year I really missed them, with pepper getting on in years, i cant have children (and no they are not baby substitutes), there was now nothing stopping me getting guinea pigs again. They are sort of there in my life for when the inevitable happens and I lose pepper, I cant imagine being without any animals in my home, but as I have a few health issues they are also a great comfort to me. They are my guilty pleasure, my reason to get up in the morning, to come home every day and always the best possible medicine in the world.

Why guinea pigs?
-they are energetic and happy little creatures. They are small but still big enough to give you a nice handful when picked up and are so sweet to cuddle. They are gentle.

What do they do for me?
-they make me smile and laugh EVERY day. I can watch them for hours even if all they are doing is eating (which they def do a lot of) Lol. They provide a companionship that is unique <3

I've had quite a few different small pets, hamsters to me are just too small for my liking and rabbits on the opposite end are too big. I know people say you don't get anything back from small pets but I find guinea pigs to be very interactive. They know you, they come to you, they take food from you, they talk to you and they usually do hilarious things. Plus they are so cute - total heartbreakers!

It is a hobby for me, I've had great experiences getting all my guinea pigs, choosing their hutches (and then getting new giant ones ha ha!), caring for them and learning their personalities etc. It does give you something to do and something to look out for beyond yourself. I've had guinea pigs probably nearing 15 years now, they've always been apart of my life. Although at this point in time I'm not getting any more I do believe I will always keep them to a degree.

I think a lot of people who haven't spent much time with guinea pigs, or only seen them living alone, don't realise how individual their personalities are and how intelligent they can be. They tend to assume that they are overgrown hamsters.

I had two guinea pigs when I was a teenager. One day I took some lettuce out and only Timmy was out in the garden. He sniffed it, and then ran down the other end of the garden to the hutch. Next minute Theodore was being pushed by Timmy out of the hutch door to show him that there were veggies out!

(NB: Theodore was named by my brother! Although I have to say it quite suited him)

I love piggies, i love the fact that they're (or some are!) independant and don't need you're attention every second of the day, (i already have a doggy, if i had four more i dont think id cope!) but at the same time they come to you, and say hello, they're an absoloute pleasure to look after and....theyre fluffy x)

My mum got the little blighters for me in the first place :))

But I love them, they make me laugh and smile when I am feeling down or upset. And they keep me company in my room

Hours of happy entertainment - that's what they give us.
And they talk! Wheek wheek!
They have cute piggy lips.

I don't see why anyone WOULDN'T want pigs:))

I kind of didn't make the conscious decision to have pigs, I cared for my bosses kids pigs whilst they went on holiday. I fell in love with them, then 6 months later in desperation they came back to me.

I've now adopted a further 3. Happy days. :))

I got my boys for many reasons:
1. I live in a flat, easy pet for my living space
2. I sat for hours stroking my nephews guinea and felt so content
3. Gives me a purpose, they need me and they give me so much back
4. I suffer from bouts of depression and spending time with them is very relaxing and theraputic
5. I was lonely living alone before, now I never will be

I can watch them for hours, they bring so much love and I can lavish so much love on them.

x)

So my first pets ever are piggys, Milly and Pepsi.

The reason I got them is that unlike dogs or cats the whole family doesn't need to be involved ( I dont mean that wrong I think that is would be nice if everybody showed an interest but say my mum - she doesnt like dogs and wouldnt be happy having one following her around etc throughout the day)
So they can be confined to an area and unlike dogs they dont need to be socialised to all the family etc ( if would be good though)
They can be left at home all day ( aslong as they have all they need of course)
Unlike buns they dont need to be vaccinated or neutered and they dont need as bigger living accomadation - they rarely bite and enjoy being held more

Ok, this is a dogey/weird one :x but I'm more comforable with their poop because unlike dog or cat poo for example you cant really contract any dangerous diseases from it

they [*]can[/*] be cheaper than say dogs, cat and rabbits ( but any animal can cost loads unexpectantly)

they can live indoors or outdoors

and finally they are so cute and when you get to know them they really respond to you and you start to feel really close to them ( so rewarding when they come up to the cage and let you stroke them etc for the first time). they are fun and interesting to watch aswell ie. flopping, wheeking, popcorning etc

hope this helped
sorry if this is a bit vague ( i'm ill and have a head ache) xx
