I have mentioned this before but would welcome any answers, why are guinea pigs so special? I have kept many animals over the years, birds, hamsters, mice, rats, cats, alsorts .At the moment I have birds, snake, pygmy hedgehogs, dogs I love them all ,we call our dogs our kids but when Edward came into my life ( my first guinea) the feelings I got for him shocked
me it was like the intense feeling I felt for my dogs and I feel the same about the other two that have come into my life but why? At first I wondered if it was the interaction I got from them but I get this from my other animals so why after all these years have these little guys
come into my life and shocked me to the core with how I feel? Is it just me or have others found this?

It's one of those questions that's hard to answer. We've always had pets in our household. Mainly cats & dogs but we've had mice, gerbils, hamsters, budgies, a tortoise and even stick insects. I can take or leave most but when my wife got a guinea pig 3 years ago my attitude completely changed. I took a lot more interest & read up on them, learning that they need piggy company so got a companion and 4 or 5 months later we had 4 piggies. I've virtually taken over their care as well as them taking over my life. I just couldn't imagine being without them now and was distraught when I lost one last year & another this year to illness. I've become a much more caring person & now I'm involved in helping at my local-ish rescue 25 miles away as well as helping with Piggy Trains around the country one of which I'm helping with later this morning. It's also a great feeling when you're fully bonded with them & they're all got their legs up on their run bars when you take their food in then they run around with excitement when you put the bowl down for them. I'm certain that if everyone kept guinea pigs, the world would be a better place.

I'm in the same boat. I've had dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and fish, but my guinea pigs have a very special place in my heart. They may not be as cuddly as a cat, or as playful as a dog, or as clean as a rabbit, but for some reason I just find them absolutely wonderful.

They're cute, they're pudgy and squishy, they have so many quirky sounds and behaviours, they are sweet and friendly once they get to know you, and they are trainable as well (one of mine knows how to "circle" on command). They are also relatively easy to handle once you know how to - as opposed to every rabbit I've owned, each of which turned into Jack The Ripper when I wanted to pick them up. They never bite, scratch or try to hurt you intentionally. AND it's so wonderful being able to buy handmade beds, cuddle cups and tunnels, as well as other fun toys to decorate their cages with.

Despite the fact that I'm 21 years old and some people probably think it's lame that I love guinea pigs so much, I'm proud to be a guinea pig momma

I'm the same, I've had (and still have!) many different pets and the pigs are indeed very special! I think it's their little characters, each have a very distinct personality, and they provide me with hours of entertainment just watching them.
I'm with stewybus, the world would definitely be a better place if everyone had guinea pigs,as long as they looked after them properly of course!

They are terribly cute small balls of fluff but with huge personalities. Peanut Butter has just upturned his fleece hidey, covering his food bowl, and started squealing for me to sort it for the 4th time today. I just find that so endearing for some reason! They even have my poochie running to them every time they wheek. And if I'm not right behind her, she'll come back to pester me until I attend to them. If piggies can enslave doggies what chance have us humans got?

I have had all sorts of animals over the years, rabbits and guinea pigs being my fave. Guinea pigs are absolute characters, I don't know of another animal with such character to match piggies! Who could resist their little lips and the amazing array of comical noises they make when they are content not to forget popcorning awwwwww

I also love rabbits because of their binkies and mischievousness! Lol

Both of these animals are often housed inappropriately and neglected at the bottom of the garden which is how I got into keeping them!

I had guinea pigs as a child and then for many years had no pets at all. Then weirdly I started dreaming about guinea pigs, so eventually I got a pair of sows, then I rescued a bunny, and then some piggies needed a home and on it went! Now I have 10 pigs, 4 rabbits, 5 foster pigs and another 2 on the way. They are the most amazing animals, so laid back, so funny, so appreciative, so incredibly cute but so tough. I have had many many guinea pigs pass through my home and I have loved everyone of them!

They never bite, scratch or try to hurt you intentionally.

i think this is a big part of it - there is no malice in a guinea pig at all. I have had loads of other pets, and currently have two cocktateils which although very entertaining and fun are also very bad tempered at times and will peck me if i do anything they don't like. Our guinea pigs however are soooo sweet and are just happy to be held and given attention. They respond to affection and when they are happy you certainly know about it!

It breaks my heart to think of all the poor little pigs basically abandoned in small cages and not given any interaction or freedom to roam on grass, i would happily rescue them all...

I've never met a guinea pig I didn't like - can't say that of any other species. For all the reasons given above I just adore them. I also think that having an unexpected piggie pregnancy and fur babies gave me an extra dollop of addiction.

Wow it is amazing these little furrys have on us . I too had piggies when I was younger, I don't think we knew what we were doing with them tbh. I got my piggies to help get over my buddy Salem dying , and although I still miss my buddy and always will. My little piggies make me laugh and I talk to them all the time. Andy popcorning over rainbow bridge, was quite, Murray is like a hurricane can demolish anything, my newbie captain jack is the cutest thing you have ever seen. All so different all so loveable. My eldest son calls me the mad guinea pig woman ! X

I got I'm first guinea pig when I was 40. My little 10 year old dog(nipper) had to be pts And 7 month later I was missing have a pet in the family. But wasn't over the loss of nipper so wasn't ready for a dog then. I was looking around the blue cross. And found 2 bonded boars(pastrami &salami) 1 was deaf, 1 was blind was a wonky eye. I fell in love. Didn't know something so small could have such a big personality. Saddly both had a lot of health problem and lost salami after a month and pastrami 8 wks ago. They were both 5yrs old and not had a good life. But they changed this old lady into a guinea pig lover. Thank you my boys x
