Winston my 4 month old baby died in his sleep last night snuggled up in his pigloo.

Yesterday he was popcorning round, eating drinking and pestering his cage mate humphrey as usual. There was no signs of illness he was being his usual happy bouncy self.

I checked on them at 8:30pm last night and he was happily munching his food with humphrey.

I went in this morning to give them there veggies and found my baby curled up in his pigloo unable to wake :( Humprey was trying to nudge him.

I took humphrey out and checked over winstons body - no diarrhea,no bloat - no marks on him - his teeth are fine - there is absolutely nothing!

I've cleaned the hutch out going through every bit of sawdust and hay - absolutely nothing there either.

I have no idea what has happened - there was no signs of needing a vet trip- yesterday he was his usual self and yet for some reason he died in the night - can anyone shed any light?

I lost dexter over a week ago due to epilepsy and his body failing but winston has never been near dexter and epilepsy isn't contagious!

Am i doing something wrong? They have constant supply of hay - a full food dish and veggies every single day! 8...

I'm so sorry to hear this, must have been an awful shock for you. I really don't know what it might have been. I think sometimes these things just happen, maybe he had a weak heart?
RIP Winston sleep well little one x

How very very sad :'( i am so sorry for your loss, and especially so young, poor little piggy.

Maybe there isn't a reason at all, maybe it was just natural causes or an underlying condition that has no explanation.

Take care x

So sorry to hear about Winston.

I understand how you are feeling as my Toffee died unexpectedly last week. Like you, I checked her over and apart from a split nail there wasnt a mark on her. no bloat, no diarrhea, teeth fine (they were done a few weeks before), no fur missing. Also like you I checked the cage thoroughly but nothing and she had been fine beforehand too but died when I was at work.

I realise now I will probably never know what happened to Toffee but the other 2 she lived with seem fine so whatever it was doesnt appear to have been contagious.

You may very well never know what happened to Winston either. I am so sorry - I just wanted to let you know you're not alone and sometimes these things 'just happen' without explanation.

RIP little Winston

Hugs
x

oh how traumatic for you and Humphrey, i am so sorry you lost your little one.

Rip Winston, sleep well little guy x

Thinking of you x

Oh how sad, so young aswell, poor little fella.

R.I.P Winston sweetie.

Hugs to you xx

aw gosh that must have been such a shock. i really hope your ok I was a totally wreck when mybaby died. from what iv read about guinea pigs health they hide their illnesses really well to stop being the easy dinner for other animals. there could be a number of internal things that might have caused this. i really do hope your ok.xx

I'm just about coping but i'm really worried about humphrey - he's in the spare hutch at the moment and has been pacing round looking for winston - i've just put loads of hay in the back of his cage to take his mind off it and it seems to have worked hes now popcorning.

Humphrey has lived with my single boar bruce before when bruce was a baby. I'm giving humphrey 2 weeks quarenteen then i will see if i can have them back together. (they were a trio but bruce hit his hormonal stage and attacked my other boar squeaky so he was seperated)

Humphrey never coped well on his own so if anyone has any idea how i can keep him occupied for a few weeks i'd be very grateful.

plenty of food toys and cuddles, and if you have nice weather and the ability to do so, you could let him have some free roam or garden time with the others boar(s).

If not i hear teddys work eally well if you remove any bits that can be chewed off and choked on.

I'm so sorry about your loss. In terms of Humphrey you want to make sure he's always occupied hiding his food etc so he has to hunt for it. Cuddles as well and if you can let him communicate with other pigs, just so he has someone to talk to.

So sorry to hear about your loss. If you really wanted to know the vet could probably have a look and tell you. It may be a heart condition? That tends to remain undetected.

I am so sorry; we seem to have lots of piggies at the moment who die suddenly without warning. I just lost one last month to sudden heart failure; she passed away within hours of showing the first symptoms (lethargy).

Aw Hun I'm so sorry maybe it was just one of those things. I once lost a seemingly perfectly healthy piggie at 14 weeks, no idea why. Like others have said it could have been a weak heart or an underlying issue you were never to know about. Don't dwell on it though. Keep Humphrey busy with new toys and lots of cuddles, hope you're both ok xx

So sad :( ... I lost my Gary like this, I was actually away travelling in Africa at the time, but my parents who were caring for him literally gave him his evening meal / cuddle ... he was fine his normal self and then the next day my parents came in and he was gone 8... No reason at all its horrible. My mum and dad were devastated but it is no ones fault.

I hope you are doing ok, the pain is intense but it eases after a while ..... you never forget the ones you loose though, they will always be in your heart xx

still can't believe he's gone - its so quiet without his loud wheek on a morning 8... 8... 8...
