Why Is Eileen Doing This?

Eileen is 7 weeks old and 2 days. She has been behaving very differently the last 2 days. She is rumblestrutting at her mum Eva and trying to mount her. She is also kicking out at me if I try to pick her up. She is basically behaving the same as Edna did when she was in season.

Is she just trying to assert her dominance as she is growing up or can sows come into season this young?
 
Blimey! I had no idea.

Funny enough I decided to double check her sex yesterday evening as I hadn't checked myself since getting her. I'm pretty sure she's a girl but now I'm worried maybe she is a boy!

I'll try and get some pics of her bits for confirmation by members here who are more knowledgeable.

We will wait for Wiebke for an expert answer - but my guess is she's female - she looks very much like the 2nd picture on the guinea lynx site .
 
I hope so. I just really don't want to get it wrong now I've seen mounting behaviour. Thanks for your help so far. I'll see what others also say. Fingers crossed!
 
Looks female to me.:nod: Mounting is a sign of dominance behaviour.:whistle: Girls mount girls and boys mount boys and any other connotation you can think of! Maybe if she is coming to sexual maturity she is trying her luck as teenagers often do (I should know I have a VERY hormonal son at the mo:help: and have had 2 others who have THANKFULLY past that stage and are now reasonable members of society!)
 
Yep, I know those teenage years well, I have an 18 year old daughter!

Maybe Eileen is just trying her luck. She's now trying to mount Edna who is the dominant female. As you can imagine, she is having none of it!
 
Like to see that one! Velvet is boss and nobody DARE mess with her! :yikes: It's got to the stage if she is upstairs (up ramp?) when I put the veggies in the bottom of the hutch the others wait until she is there before they start eating!:nod:

Same with Edna! She gets to pick which bowl to eat from and also is allowed to steal from the other bowls :sly:

She's having a season; this is typical behaviour during that time. You will not see it necessarily every time, but whenever a sow has got a stronger season.

Hi, I have read that thread when you linked it in my post about Edna being in season.

It was suggested I tag you as I put up a photo of Eileen's bits to confirm she is female, just in case.
 
If you are worried about her gender, please have a look inside the opening below the button. With boars it simply goes straight down. Sows have got a kind of arrangement with side flaps just below the rim that seals the opening unless a sow is in season. At Eileen's age, the difference between the two genders in that area is quite obvious while the surface can still look relatively similar until the boar testicles start descending.

Sows generally have their first season between 4-6 weeks and then roughly every two weeks, but not every season will be noticeable to you.
 
Oh bless her, she looks like a girl to me. I'm dealing with a strong season with Tonks right now and it's been pretty hairy today! She's being a real cow, she normally is but the others are hot and bothered and don't wanna put up with her today lol.

Hope she settles down soon :)
 
Betsy has a total change of personality whenever she has a season. It's like she is a completely different piggy! Normally she is calm and wants to be picked up, doesn't complain etc. When she has a season she hates being picked up, complains like mad and the only way to calm her down is to gently stroke her with a finger nail under her left eye. Then when I go to put her back with the others she complains like mad and struggles cos she doesn't want me to let her go! Honestly I can't win!
 
I have a piggy at the moment having a strong season too (my usually placid piggy Patchy has turned into a demon the last two seasons) I feel bad for her but mostly bad for my other piggy Coco although she tolerated the rumbling, chasing, rumble strutting and so forth until she got nipped and then she put Patchy firmly in her place and Patchy went back to her hidey and there has been just constant rumbling all night then. Coco used to be a real so an so when she was having her strong season but she has mellowed out now and I can hardly tell when she is in season now but I can't help but think she is getting her own back now with a extremely grumpy and vengeful Patchy.
 
My other 2 girls you can't tell when they have a season. I feel sorry for poor Betsy!
 
Thanks for everyone's help.

I had a look last night but found it tricky to get a proper look so tried again this morning and she is a girl. Phew! She also seems to have calmed down today and isn't being as annoying to the other 2 girls. Yay!
