Hello, I have a male guinea pig that I will usually take out of his cage every once and awhile to bond with him. I’ve had him for a while so I know he’s mostly comfortable with me. For about the past month he’s been starting to teeth chatter a few minutes in to me interacting with him. I don’t think I bother him too much I just let him be and will occasionally pet him gently. I know they can chatter for different reasons but I’m not sure why he started doing this. It’s only when I take him out of his cage. Is he scared?

Teeth chattering can be for many reasons - one being annoyance and another being pain.
I would suggest a vet check to ensure he is completely healthy and that there isnt anything bothering him. Otherwise, he may be saying that he doesn’t want to be held.
But do remember we can only guess.

Does he have a cagemate? It’s so important a guinea pig isn’t kept alone.

Yes he does have a cage mate. And he has been to the vet recently, everything is good health wise. I’m pretty sure now he just wasn’t in the mood!

At lap time one of my boys chatters his teeth to demand a treat. I tend to look at body language as well as my other boy sounds like he's complaining while he looks very relaxed, legs out and everything. Now I just think he's telling me about his day!
