Just a random question of the evening, I've been looking at some rescue sites (as you do) and they have so many boars looking for forever homes, not to mention 'second hand' sites which seem to be full with boars.

My mums friends piggie, which she recently got from a pet shop gave birth four weeks ago she rehomed the little girl no problem, but is struggling finding homes for the boys (four in total). Does knowone like boys?

I love my boys, and think they're the bees knees!

Oh and another random thought I've also noticed our local RSPCA center is filled with mainly male dogs, and cats too. Is it just male animals that people dont like?

Sadly male piggies are really hard to rehome :( We rehome females with no problems at all but pairs of males do tend to stick :( Single males aren't a problem generally :)

Not ever noticed it with anything else we rehome (bunnies/hamsters/cats). I must say male cats always seem to be more friendlier xx

People seem to have this notion that 'boys fight' and are 'troublemakers'.

My boys are less trouble makers than the girl piggies we've had!

Boars often have a bad reputation. As so many get just stuck together by looks in a shop or at a breeders when they're bought instead of being carefully bonded, the rate of fall outs is so much bigger and the myth is becoming self fulfilling - sadly!

There is also the problem that if you have a bigger group or want to add to it, it has to be sows and only one neutered boar. I simply could not give a loving home to as many rescue piggies as I do if I had boar pairs each in their own cage.

They are harder to home, and I can't speak for everyone, but I get more boars in.

In regards to dogs/cats. Most are taken in/found straying are entire males. Males are more often found roaming because they go looking for females. So hence why they get more in. about 80% at the stray kennels I go to are entire males.

Also petshops tend to sell more males as breeders keep females for breeding.

I feel sorry for the boars as they really do get a raw deal thanks to misconceptions and such, just glad that I was able to provide a home for my flash man, it might have only been one male adopted but its made all the difference to him.

Would love to provide a pair of boars with a home but I know I am at my limit :(

I've had 2 boars and 1 sow, I found the boars to be more inquisitive and friendly than the sow, and a lot more vocal come feeding time. :(|)

we have 6 boars (3pairs) and they are the best aside from the occasional argument they're fine yes they are trouble makers but i find this naughty adventurousness endearing

If only I could have another male, I totally would! My OH is not allowing it but if I ever find that one special piggy that I know really needs me I will bring him home and deal with the OH after piggy is settled. I have a big heart for animals. I would be an animal horder if I could :red My house would be filled with 5x2's and paired boars if I could. I love them!

Boars are all kinds of awesome. Ours are currently sitting like little lions/chickens on nests [delete as appropriate!] just looking at each other. One is like, "that last bit of romaine was mine, you know..."
And the other is thinking, yup, but you don't know where I've hidden it...!

Girls would just be sat talking about the gossip from the next hutch!

Boars rule. If they could live in herds, I'd have a dozen.

As you know whee started off with boars (Sully and Duke) so i just don't get it............. @)
It doesn't matter if they boars or sows they're all so so different..........you can't just put a label on them and say .....oh boars will be this and sows will be that......... it's just not always correct.......:{

All mine are boars :).
They have the odd 'boxing match'.. mostly over who eats what veggies or goes in which tunnel.. haha

The only problem I find with boars is that it is difficult to have more than a pair living together. I have 12 boars, two of which refuse to integrate and so I have 7 cages. I would love to have them all living together happily, but it would never happen. I have happily had 5 sows living together no problems. Other than the integration hassle, boars are just as good as sows. Although it has put me off having this amount again and I will most likely opt for sows in the future, so I can have a large shared group.

I had a girl piggy who lived to 9 years old and she was very hormonal and grumpy at times... My current male pig is never like this. I was wondering the exact same thing though... Wee Companions (my local rescue) is FILLED with male guinea pigs. They neuter them in hopes of easier adoptions but I still see them sitting a LOT longer than the females.

I'm really a fan of male gp's as well as male dogs. Even with a small scale dog breeder who doesn't keep any of the females you see people buying all the girls first and many of the boy pups are left. They get a bad rap for no reason.

Another boar fan here:))

We currently have a gang of 4, 1 neutered boy and his 3 wives and I also have 4 foster boys staying with me who all arrived as singles but I have managed to pair up 2 of them, am just about to try the other 2.

Our very first piggies many moons ago were boys - at the time we didn't have internet access and we aquired our boys from the local garden centre, together with accommodation that was far too small. I learnt the hard way that boys need more space and 2 of everything! Subsequently we have always managed to keep our boys in bonded pairs and even had a very happy trio at one time.

Boys rock in this house!x) (only don't tell my girlies that!:)))

I too am totally on board with the boar fan club! I havent owned any sows since i was in pre school (the 2 'healthy plump' females from the pet shop for my third birthday which unsurprisingly tuend into 8 rolleyes) ive always had boars in pairs or groups of 4's. This all started quite innocently when i was younger buying a good looking pair in a pet shop and the belief in the character that boys have became instilled in me. It wasn't until many years later i heard that boys are meant to fight and was so surprised as luckily I haven't had any issues!

I think they have the BEST piggy lips too x)

I love my boys, not that I didn't love my girls, but the three I have now, really do have some amazing characters lol!

They like their cuddles and kisses, and they are very vocal at dinner time, and they know when I'm heading down to feed them lol!

I'd love to get some girls too, but my boys get on so well, that I don't want them to start fighting as that is one reason why males fight with each other because they are fighting for the females. Like most males, animals and human for that matter lol!

When i first got my two boys i didnt have any clue with boar being harder to bond etc, and just got them purely based on the fact that they were pigs and i wanted piggies!

Haha! I have found in our area, the girl cats scarper when you go near them and the boys will happily hang around for a cuddle :)

Ahh thank you for explaining the dog roaming, i didnt realise that was why now it makes sense :)

I never thought on the breeders keeping females for breeding that makes a lot of sense why there is so many males:(

I love boars/male animals I currently have three boars, one boy hamster, a male cat....and would love to add more to my collection i think they are fab. I always find, even with our girl dog taz, females are moody!

I'd have a huge herd of boars if i could drool

I do like boars, and adore my three boys. But as you say, I do want to opt for having a duo and a herd in future. (Ie a pair of boys and a herd with a male and females). :)
