So a friend adopted two pigs (apparently sisters) from a rescue to go with their neutered boar and sow.
They had them living alongside each other but the two 'sisters' fell out and had a fight.
They tried the least dominant 'sow' with the neutered boar and sow pair. It all seemed fine except the new 'sow' kept humping the sow.
I was asked to advise, and yes, on closer inspection they had adopted two boars.
So now we have two brothers living separately because of being exposed to a sow, plus a potentially pregnant sow. Fortunately the neutered boar didn't react and cause a fight (although it might have prevented them being together for two days if they had fought initially).
What a shambles, all because someone at this so called rescue couldn't sex pigs properly. Apparently she usually rehomes rabbits and took in the piggies from a hoarder situation, but you don't rehome animals until they have been correctly sexed and checked by an experienced person. Just as I wouldn't sex rabbits or any other animal without checking with someone who has experience in such matters.
So I am going to help rehome these two boars as we don't want them going back to the original rescue.

Are you able to name the “rescue” that made this mistake @pig in the city - would be helpful for us and other forum members to be wary of any mis-sexed piggies from there.
I do hope you can sort the poor boars out. Such a shame that their bond has been broken. And how devastating if the owners end up with a pregnant sow. What a mess.

oh my that first boar is just utterly beautiful.

Such a shame about the mix up. Shame the owner didn't check the sex first as well.

I think it's just a back yard set up Vicki. Someone who means well l am sure but l can make more enquiries
Yes she is a lone rescuer. Have offered to give her training in sexing pigs if she wishes.

Such a shame and I feel sorry for her as like you say, she probably means well but this is why I don’t like advising on gender threads unless it’s obviously a well endowed boar as not all boars have visible testicles

And not all sows look the same, either...

Your offer to help give some training is very generous of you Barbara. Just a shame she thought she didn’t need any help/training in the first place. So many backyard “rescues” around. Just goes to show how the standards vary so much.

Apparently she is coming to our Xmas fair on Sunday. Will have to keep my cool!

At least you were asked for advice (in the end!). What a mess! I have met one or two ‘rescuers’ that have made me cringe..... 😕 ..... I now know that one of them is a well known animal hoarder.... 😞

You really do have to be so careful, even if the ‘rescuer’ seems to be well meaning! I really hope the female piggy isn’t pregnant.

Yes I think the 'rescue' my little girly came from wasn't the best, thankfully I didn't listen to the terrible advice I was given (spend a week introducing them, taking them away etc! Nope!).
Only when I went to pick her up I was told she'd been separated from mum and her two sisters, a few weeks old living alone, getting time with various pigs but no one to cuddle up in her cage bless her. Terrible.
Why I think she's got a licking problem and hates to be parted from pig/human. She's nearly five and a half now and I got her at 7weeks! Still the same!
These people think they're doing right but no knowledge or experience to back it up sometimes!
