After Africa's slow death, Corly's mystery illness... I wake up to find Mali shaking and spewing out Water diarrear. After giving him medicine I'm sitting here missing a meal for my boyfriends family and don't know if in the next 10 hours he'll be alive or not. Why are all my pigs getting unwell. 8...8...8...

Oh gosh such a sad time when they take turns at being ill. Mine often plan to be ill together they find it much more fun to watch me worry about all of them.

I do hope Mali recovers soon, What medicine did you give him? Where you able to see the vet today?

Sending healing vibes to Mali..

I can't afford an emergency vet, they cost too much plus my boyfriend can't take me anywhere *** he has a meal for his mom tonight which I'm now missing.

I've given him one crushed buscanban like my rodentologist told me to, and I'm getting him that stuff that helps them when they're dihydrated?

you need to go to the vets...
they'll need some sort of sub- cut fluids and fibre plex and god knows what else...
the runs are pretty drastic in guineas... its serious...
could you not get someone to bring you there and sort out a payment plan with the vets... i've had to do one of them before...

We only have the vets local to us who I don't trust or the one in Lichfield but I'm not sure how much time we have to get there.
He's bathing him self?

well... i'd suggest you phone the closer one for times sake... (thats what i'd do)
i dont want to stress you out but your piggie is ill... the runs is bad news...
good luck... and keep us posted on how they're doing...

I understand he's got around 8 hours left if it is fatal. I'm crying for that reason. :(

I don't understand why you would be crying surely that's if you sit and do nothing. If you go to the Vet then they can help I am sure not every Guinea Pig that has Diarrhea dies.

It can be fatal if left untreated yes, but if you intervene now at least you know you did everything you could and your pig has a chance to recover much better than the alternative.

right....
I'm sure your going to think I'm out of order but.... if I'm honest I'm williing to risk it...
your piggie is ill...
get off the computer... stop crying and get to a bloody vet...!
your responsible for your piggies and I'm sure they are very important to you...
so you know what to do now... everyone has reitterated...

so please just go... your piggies needs fluids and medical treatment if not hospitalisation....

Oh hun I know it's really hard but you've got to get him to the vet a.s.a.p.
You're going to feel so much worse if you don't do everything you can to help him and what he needs at the moment is a vet who can give him fluids and the medicine he needs. He's past the stage that any 'first aid' you can do will help enough.
I hope he gets better. Keep us posted.

This has gone past a stage where giving him some charcoal to absorb gases until a vet opens, if his droppings are like water he needs to be there asap. If you have other pigs, and have lost 2 recently and now this one is ill you need to make sure you don't bring any other pigs in and if you handle these and go to touch a friends ones, make sure you was your hands between time.

Is there a possibility that these 3 cases are linked? Any vet is better than no vet and if you can't get there, you'll have to pay a call out fee. It really is money or your pigs life if his tummy is that bad.

If you do have to go to/call out the rubbish vet, make sure that he/she doesn't leave/you don't leave empty handed.

Just tell the vet what you gave, so they know how to proceed, don't think you can't go just because you gave him something yourself.

renate is there anyone who could lend you the money for the emergency vet?or maybe they will let you pay it off,it may be worth going then after theyve seen him explain the lack of money.hugs hun I'm sorry i cant offer you much help

My boyfriend paid, Mali died at 10pm last night. The vet couldn't do a thing other than give him fluids, an antibiotic and some probiotic which I couldn't even get into him in the end due to his mouth clamping shut. This is why I don't enjoy emergency vets, sometimes it's just a pigs time to go and as much as it hurts both times I've gone to an emergency vet, they or I were able to do anything yet still getting a nice big charge of £100. On the plus side, they're a damn better vet then any others I've been so... least I know I can stick with them. Mali's cage will be on sale soon, I'm not getting anymore pigs, I'll stick with the 5 I've got left Corly, Zambi, Zuki, Kenya, Callis.

Oh, I rang my local (old vet) and he gave me abuse on the phone, something I didn't need, so frankly that was a lost cause. My boyfriend missed an important meal with his mom which I feel so bad about but for me my pigs come first, I dont' expect this from him.

Thank you for all your advice, I'm going to go into my little cocoon for a while. xx

I'm doing okayish, I just keep wondering if I could of done something, because apprantly it's hard to know what causes the problem in the first place. I've been told to keep a close eye on all the pigs incase I touched one after touching Mali but I'm very sure I didn't. As soon as I saw Mali was ill, the other pigs took second base and I stayed with him constantly.

Well I truly hope your other piggies are okay :) You did your best, you got him to the vet asap and you couldn't have done more, it just makes it all the more sadder after that you lost him.
Keep your pecker up, just don't feel guilty :)

Yeah, I'm going to sell his cage *** it hurts to look at it and I don't want any more pigs for now. I've got 5, two are unwell, one I think has cystitus the other god knows what but started with cystitus (vets appointment Tuesday). He's slowly gaining weight again tho so I think maybe he's improving. The other 3 are perfect, fat, active :)

oh sweety i'm so sorry:( like you say sometimes it is just a piggies time to go, and rushing around can just spoil their last few minutes. i lost my dog last year through a heart defect, we knew it was coming, but when the time came she was at home in her own bed with me cuddling her, i don't regret not taking her because there was nothing they could have done by that time anyway. you did all you could, so don't feel guilty. it's a hard enough time for you at the moment anyway losing all 3 pigs so close together. you tried hard and got to the vets, there's nothing else you could have done. sending lots of hugs x

costed us over £1000 in a long fight we lost recently, too. £100 sounds reasonable.
so sorry for your pig.

at least you found a good vet to trust

Aye but when your on £53 a week and your rent just went up by £30, it's almost choking me. I'm glad I havea boyfriend with a decent wage but it goes against all my morals leaning on him this way. The pigs are equally mine and his, apart from Corly who I had before I met him though so I suppose going halves is right. Lately tho, I've been able to do nothing, I know personally if we broke up, I'd have to give up at least 1-2 pigs. Good that isn't on the cards, a house is instead lol
