Hi everyone,

I haven't been a regular member for a wee while but wanted to leave a little tribute to my beautiful Widget, who we had to say goodbye to this afternoon.

An elderly lady of 7 years, Widget - alongside sister Pixel, who we lost in 2019 - was one of the original Oakley Pigs, joining us in February 2014 at 8 weeks old. Little did we know at the time that both were expectant mothers, and would produce 8 offspring between them - some of you might remember my pleas for help and guidance! Thor, the resident fluff-pig and one of Widget's babies, lived out his neutered life with the hairy ladies (plus Freya, who joined us a couple of years later from Windwhistle Warren).

Widget had a look of perpetual terror, and we always joked that she had Seen Some Things. Despite her highly strung nature, she was very gentle, enjoyed being hand-fed treats, and in her later years, being stroked behind the ears. She never quite got over the abject horror of being picked up though, which would make her stretch out as long as she could get and freeze, like a hairy plank of pig 😂

It took her quite some years to find her demanding voice, but already it's one that we're very much missing. Her passing not only leaves Freya without her buddy, but signals the end of an era for us also. Sleep tight, little Worried Pig ❤️

I remember well your rather dramatic start on the forum! Very sorry for your loss but great and a testament to your good care that Widget could live to such a great age and even get gradually over the traumas of her and her own mother's past.

Piggies with a high stress level as their default setting usually experience it in their mother's womb as their 'normal' before they are even born. They will gradually relax over the course of a life to certain degree but never quite fully. While their mothers may relax in good care, their stressy offspring, even when born in safety, tends to have a worse time.

Here are our tips on what you can do for any bereaved and single piggies:

I'm really sorry for your loss. I will miss the stories of widget the worry pig. Sleep tight little one

Sleep tight little worried looking Widget. I’m so sorry for your loss @katanamoon. She was such a cutie. It’s always hard losing the last of your “first” piggies as it’s the end of an era. Hope that Freya is doing ok x

Thank you all very much for your lovely words, it really means a lot. We're keeping a close eye on Freya and giving her lots of attention but it's such a strange and hollow feeling seeing her on her own 😔

Mate, I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful Widget. Massive hugs to you at this very sad time. Please be kind to yourself.

Sleep well little one

RIP Widget
