Hey,

I just thought I would post a photo of our set up and see what everyone thought. I want to make sure they have enough room.

The first photo is of the cage we were sold by the pet shop. We were told it would be big enough .

We did however already have the second photo on it way. We had ordered it when we were thinking about getting guineas (when we saw the boys it hadn't arrived- hence the pet shop cage).

But now from seeing all your amazing set ups we both feel the guineas need much more space. Despite having the run of the conservatory when we are with them.

So Adam built them a little pen. It had a carpeted ramp (that's why I'm marrying him- clever boy) that will attach to their wooden house and a little cover and he's putting the floor on tonight. They can then have the run of their little house and be in their pen all day!

Do you think the walls are high enough?

And is it big enough?

x

Yup, that first one is definitely too small. It looks really tiny o.o I have a Ferplast 100 here, but that looks even smaller again. Argh I really wish pet shops would stop claiming such tiny cages are suitable, it's really inappropriate.

However I have zero experience with hutches in general so I can't comment on the others, sorry...definitely looks better than the tiny thing in pic #1 though!

I think maybe it's a bit small, with the C&C you can get plenty of room for hideys & to run around room. You must never tell your husband to be, he's clever or it will go straight to his head. Lol

It's a nice pen, and you are totally correct in that bigger is better with our piggies. The pen your boyfriend has made will give them extra room but I do think you will end up finding that they would appreciate more room still and would appreciate something large enough to run proper laps and go through tunnels etc.

You've hit on a plan that works really well, in that attaching a run to their cage/hutch and letting them come and go, is something that pigs really do enjoy.

Do you mind me making a suggestion? I find that metal grids work out really good for this - it means I have a choice as to how the run is laid out, and how big it is on a given day. We have a small living room where our pigs live and the full run covers most of the available floorspace. Sometimes I only set the run out a little, instead of all the way. Having folding grids means their run is as big or small or to what ever shape works best on any given day.

Here's mine with the run out part of the way.

Here is a comparison of various cage sizes that gives you an idea; I have placed two normal sized adult guinea pig into the smallest to show you how just how little space they have to run or to get away from each other. The little cage that the pet shop recommends is OK as a hospital cage, but otherwise, it is fit only for a single hamster at best.

I am still amazed that pet shops can get away with this.
The 2 piggies show very clearly how little room there is, and that is before they even have a food bowl or a single hidey
On the plus side @Wiebke ke your two seem to think it could work as a hay tray placed inside a decent sized cage

That is what I have been using it for... ;)

I'll have to get Adam back in the garage to build some more!

Thankyou all for your advice- it's very much appreciated!

Their house would be better for them if they would use the ramp! Bless them! We will get there though! Hopefully they will use the ramp into their new pen and then get the hang of the ramp in their house!

They may be afraid of the ramp because there's no sides to it, is there any way to attach sides to it? They might feel safer trying it that way.

That'll give Adam something to think about! Although havin just given them some coriander and almost lost an arm I reckon coriander might also help! Xx

What a good idea having a hutch with a wooden garden and a ramp into it.

Mine have to be lifted (in a hidey) from their cage (150cm x 75cm) onto the floor and into their 4 x 5 grid (well shoe rack square things). They seem pretty happy to go back into their cage in the evenings but I am now in the process of making them a bigger cage off the floor to save my back.

Look on sites like Boyles pet housing and Manor house pets for lovely set ups and good looking ramps. Enjoy.
