my mini pig seems to be trying to suckle mum but doesnt seem to be getting any thing do you think it will be ok is nibbling hay but nothing much else.

Sadly no you need to replace the missing milk.

Do you have any critical care? If not you can get it from a vet or you can mash pellets and feed off the handle of a tea spoon. The more frequent the better so every 1-2 hours. Also offer the veg and hay so pup can feed himself. And also offer water if pup isn't drinking much to keep him hydrated!

Good luck!

our vets in oz do sell womberoo supplement milk for animals including piggies so maybe you could get some of that and feed every hour or 2. perhaps someone has a female who would be willing to suckle the little one. good luck with it and hoping bubs gets her milk and hugs to mum and bubs :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

do you mean the pellets out of the dry feed if i add a bit of water to the stick like food that swells with water. I ve but i have never had this problem sound so naive bt i am not wise to this .

There is the museli for the pigs not that but the pellets like Guinea Pig Excel. It does swell but that is ok.

Personally I would contact a vet for some critical care and explain what has happened. I paid £7.50 for a large bag of it. :)

ok will do that today thanks for that do you think it is because she did not eat the afterbirths

I'm not sure really some new mums are just so overwhelmed after giving birth they just don't know what to do. Keep us posted on how they are all doing! x

It can take up to 24 hours for the milk flow to begin. Green leafy veg helps with the milk flow.

I vaguely remember reading about raspberry leaf in connection with pregnant or lactating mums, but don't remember the connection, maybe someone else will know what I'm on about :) Think you can get it from some health food shops.

Best of luck, hope that milk flow starts and all goes well :)

A few years ago I had two pregnant guinea pigs that gave birth to four piggies each although one was sadly died because she didn't know she had to get it out of the sac and I had visitors and was too late. :'( One of the babies out of the other litter died within a few days so we were left with 6 piggies. Suddenly a few days after the birth one of the mums just suddenly got ill and died - she got some sort of chest infection and it happened so quickly that we didn't even have time to get her to the vet. A couple of days later the other mother got the same and we rushed her to the vet where he gave her injections but she sadly died too. We had 6 orpan piggies that were about five and six days old so I bought some lactol from the petshop and carefully syringe fed them - they used to fight for the syringe as soon as they saw it. They grew up into big strong guinea pigs and were absolutely fine.

I also have had a mum die after giving birth and I was left with four babies plus I have had two other occasions when mum wouldn't feed them.
I syringe fed them with lactol (I think, if that is the puppy milk powder) supplied by my vet. But on the first occasion I put the babies with another mum who adopted them and I supplemented their milk with evaporated milk thinned down with warm water. No sure if that was recommended but I read it in a book and they did very well on it.

Syringe feeding takes alot of time and commitment. I just used to pop them in my fleece pocket for warmth after their feed! :smitten:
Good luck with everything ... let us know how it goes!
Plenty of green soft grass might help also.
