I know I have posted a thread like this a few weeks ago but i am still worried as I have Archie now. So Alfie and Archie have ran out of there oxbow hay today, and we are only able to get another big bag of Oxbow hay Sunday. Was just wondering if the piggies will be ok all Saturday without hay. Alfie has been ok for a few days without hay, but even though it will only be one day, I'm worried about Archie and Alfie. They currently have an Oxbow timothy hay chew mat and an oxbow timothy twist along with plenty of other chews in their cage.

Me again haha!

Obviously, my first comment is just get your next bag of hay asap as hay makes up 80% of a guinea pigs diet and helps keep their guts moving and teeth down. Now by the sounds of things their hay chew mat and Timothy twist offers some fibre so that's good but be mindful that this can't be a permanent solution. Perhaps (if you have access to some from your garden) pick some grass in the meantime. Not alot, especially if they haven't yet had any but just a small amount to act as fibre in the meantime. I have run out of hay before and the pigs have had to wait a couple of hours until I can hay, in the meantime I offer grass and get hay asap.

Thanks, I will make sure to give them some fresh, washed grass tomorrow. And I know the chew mat and twist arent replacements but atleast they are hay chews. Will make sure to get the fresh bag of oxbow hay ASAP on Sunday.

Would you be able just to get some ordinary hay today to tide them over?

As mentioned above, is there ordinary hay you can get? Be prepared next time and get another bag in before the current one runs out. Or perhaps have one bag of ‘ordinary’ hay in case of emergency. I think a day is pushing it.

There really isnt any substitute for unlimited hay, pick up a cheap bag for now and always keep a spare bag hidden somewhere just in case! I always make sure I have at least one spare unopened 2 or 3kg bag of meadow hay, and if I open that I immediately order more online for next day delivery.

Why don't you just get a big bulk bag, and buy another when you're half way through it ready for when you run out? Couldn't you get online deliveries?

Storing bulk bags can be a pain, though. I used to buy 10 1kg bags at a time because I could store those, but I couldn't have stored a 10kg bag. Online deliveries make it easier but then there's usually at least a day or two wait for it to turn up then.

I always have a bag in spare as the hay I buy (B&M) one sometimes isn't in store... I always plan ahead as would not like them to run out - any hay will do until their usual one arrives...

I just always buy hay a week or so before it runs out. With six piggies I think they'd gang up on me if I didn't have hay for them 24/7!
