My girls live in our brick outhouse which has a large gap under the door allowing plenty of air to get in. Today, I nailed down a towel so that it can be folded down the front of the hutch therefore covering the entire hutch front. As it gets colder, I will put their carpet around the sides of the hutch. I thought that the towel would be a good idea to keep any draughts out. I haven't pulled the towel over the hutch tonight as its quite mild but now I am worried about it. Do you think that my girls will be able to breath in a hutch, in an outhouse with a hand towel pulled over the front of the hutch? I am also concerned that it will be too dark in the hutch considering that its dark in the outhouse when the door is shut

mmm...i've not had any experience with doing this. I'll let some other's answer.

Cover just half of the hutch with the towel, so they still have area where they can get out and get some light.
I do the towel thing in summer time here but I only ever cover half the mesh.

If you think they are getting too cold in winter in the outhouse is there a possibility to insulate the outhouse a bit?
Or install a small heater in the house that you can leave on during the winter time?

I pull my piggies curtains to cover only half the hutch fronts.

A poss solution to it being dark - could you cut a hole into the top of the door, mesh it & pin plastic to the back of the mesh. It'd let light in & still keep the rain/wind out :)

Or (if you can't insulate the outhouse) what about insulating the outer of the hutch with bubblewrap & a blanket :)

They'll be having a carpet wrapped around the hutch as well :)

Hi,
I cover my pigies up over night and then open in the morning, Does the outhouse have any windows ? Mine has a door and a window and I leave the door open to let air in day as long as it's not too cold. I v'e only had mine a few days now but in the past I have done this with my other pigies and they have been fine just make sure they have enough hay especially if you keep the door open in the day.
:)

It does not have a window but has a huge gap under the door which lets light in. We keep the door open during the day but shut it up at night :) What do you cover yours up with at night and with what?
