can you guys tell me what you think about leaving my 2 gp's alone for a whole day and night?

I'm planning on giving them good amount of veggies in the morning before I go, plus lots and lots and lots of hay, 2 bowls of pellets and 2 full water bottles.

They will basically be alone with this for around 24 hours.

Do you think this is ok?

Personally no, what if one falls ill or even both or they hurt themselves and needs vet treatment, or if the house is broken in to or catches fire? I know all of these are worst case cinarios (SP?) But they are all possible, its not worth the risk, have you got no one who can check on them?

Personally I wouldnt leave any animal alone for 24 hours.

Food wise it sounds great but knowing my guinea pigs they would eat it all in one go rolleyes

If one/both got ill that guinea pig(s) would have to wait to be treated, if one got trapped or they got into a fight who would see to them?

I must admit I have done it in the past (7 years ago) and came home to a very ill guinea pig and I would never leave them alone again.

Could a neighbour not pop in to check on them?

my husband is adamant that he doesn't want the neighbours to have a key and the code to our alarm. we don't have any family or really close friends who live very close to us. :(

To be honest I've been worrying about it but in the end decided to get some opinions on here.

I will just have to drive back and check on them in the evening (3 hours driving) would be really awful if something happened to them. :{.

could they not go with you? or you leave later/come back earlier?

Do you trust your pigs in the care of your neighbours?
Could you not just send them next door for the day?

lauralucy you are fantastic!

sometimes you just have a blonde moment!

of course they can just come with me. :))

sometimes the most obvious answer evades us lol :)

its not easy to move them at all, they have a really really heavy cage and bedrooms built by hubby. :))

but I need to buy a smaller one for when they go to my mother in law for our holidays so I will drop and buy it in the morning and then they will have a travel one too.

I am going to go against the general opinion here, but I am also away for one day and night in late August and am planning to leave my indoor pigs alone as the people who would usually help are away too.

Its not something I like to do and will keep looking for someone to pop round until I go, but again will do what you are doing, extra bowl of food, extra water bottle and hay rack.

Also I have an elderly pig, so this plan will only go ahead if she is fully well, otherwise she may have to go to the vets overnight which I am sure would be quite stressfull for her :/

thanks missaqua, i know its not ideal. one of mine is around 8 weeks pregnant too so its weighing up leaving them against the stress of moving her for one night.

but as the general opinion is not to leave them i think i'll go with the coming with me option.
