My boys don't 'wheek wheek wheek' at me . . .

I think we've got a good routine: clean-out and feed first thing in the morning. They come out of their 'bedroom' to have a nose at me, but not a whisper out of them.

Last Sunday I had a 'lie-in' until 9am zzz, so I was a couple of hours later than usual, and they did come scampering out. Mr Bear stood up against the wire, but he seemed to be chattering (I thought that was an 'annoyance' sign?) but he looked like he was just keen to get his greens and food . . . and Mr Piglet will chat to himself for a bit when his food appears and then scamper away!

They've only been living with us for about 11 days now. So, is it too early to expect them to talk to me?
I would just love to hear that wheeking sound!

Most pigs will wheek eventually :) Out of my tree Martha wheeked after a few days but it took Mette-Marit ages. Bo don't really wheek but he has other funny noises :)

Mr Piglet is one of the noisiest baby boars I have ever had in my kitchen - so he will certainly 'wheek' his head off once he's settled! The rustle of a bag should do it! :))

Was he really! How funny.
I can see that Mr Piglet wants to say something as he's always making little noises when exploring, but as you say, he probably needs to feel more settled to do a full-blown WHEEK WHEEK. I simply can't wait for that day!

Rustling a bag or - like me - making a tsk tsk noise for "food is on the way" is a surefire way to getting a wheek out of a piggy very quickly!

Mine wheek for food, especially if I'm late giving them their food! They'll wheek when they hear me going outside or if they hear me picking grass (their favourite food). Maybe if you stand outside the cage holding their food for a minute before giving it to them, so they know you have the food, then they might wheek because you're teasing them! Once they associate you with food and get a bit greedy then they'll wheek :)

I have had mine nearly 3 weeks and they still don't wheek at me when I come out, but then I am not around them constantly as they are outside piggies. They tend to chatter to each other and that's it. It would be nice if they did, but I'm happy that they just get on with it, i don't think they look at me yet as the hand that feeds them

Mine wheek at the sound of the knife and chopping board or the rustle of a carrier bag rolleyes Try always rustling a bag as you give then their veg - they'll soon catch on that the noise means food and should wheek fairly quickly - be warned though sometimes once they get going they dont know when to stop !!!

Teresa xx

I just have to rustle a bag or open the fridge to get a unison of wheeks! :))
I'm sure they will catch on soon! Love your av! gorgeous piggie! x)

My girls took several weeks to settle before they started wheeking. New girl Minx arrived recently and has a wheek that's so loud I thought someone was blowing a whistle when I first heard it. :(|)

I know how weird this may sound but i find it works, i made up silly little songs when i got each one of mine and the songs have there names in and i always always sing at them and they squeak and pur like mad! ( they have a song each)

If i dont sing it and walk in they will still come say hi but no noise and if anyone else goes in singing or not they will make no noise.

I realise that sounds weird ... they arnt full blown melodies just couple of sentances of bad singing lol

But they like it so i shall carry on lol

:(|) So funny you should mention singing, as I found myself singing a little rhyme for the boys earlier this evening! I don't think it's weird at all - you should hear the 'guinea language' I speak to my piggies . . .singing is a natural progression.
Thanks for the advice! :)

When we got Stripes he didn't wheek for a good week, not a peak out of him then suddenly one day he let out the loudest wheek I've ever heard!
It takes time for them to feel confident enough to use their full voice. Try getting in to a routine of rustling a bag then feeding so they learn to associate the noise.

In our old house the boys would go crazy when they heard the washing machine door click open because they new that I'd be going in the garden to hang it out and grass usually came back in! Same with the back door keys, I couldn't move them without them going wheektastick!

Now they wheek at tin foil. I've no idea why cause none of their food is wrapped in it! Crazy boys. :(|)
