Will they starve themselves?

This probably a silly question but when I had to stop feeding gerty guinea pig food on saturday I rushed out and bought P@ H muesli and also supa excel, I put both in the cage, they are selective eating with the muesli and not touching the excel at all. I took the muesli out and left them with the muesli but after a couple of hours of watching them they hadn't touched it so I put the muesli back in which they immediately started eating. Should I persevere with the Excel and remove the muesli?

I am also going to buy some of the purple bag guinea food from Tesco when I go to see if they will eat that. I bought the museli cos it looked similar to the gerty but am worried it is not too good for them.

advice and thoughts gratefully received....am off to Tescos now but will look back in a a few hours

Hello!

I've just changed mine over to supa excel from P@H muesli (the vet told me to), and I mixed to 2 together for a while. They picked out all the muesli, then left the rest. I left it a couple of hours before topping the bowl up. They gave in to their greedy tummies in the end and ate the excel! They actually seem to quite like it now.

I think if they get hungry they will eat it! As long as you don't give in to them too quickly. Just be patient and keep an eye on them.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I did mix the two together like you did and mine did the same!

Will try again just using the excel. I did buy a bag of the tesco purple bag of food which looks very similar to gerty so if they will not eat the excel I will try them on that!

Hi there,

I had no choice re doing it slowly....For those who read my post on saturday I found the whole bag of Gerty guinea infested with maggots....yeuch!

I have given them the Tesco guinea pg food which thanks to the folks on here who use it and recommended it I bought and they LOVE it! I am still putting a little of the excel into it as I dont want to waste it but so far they have pulled that out!

i meant with all the different foods! but atleast you've found something they like now O0

Oh I see...Brain not in gear! Cheers...yes they really love it and it is full of goodstuff and very reasonable O0

I chop and change between different brands of food with no problems. They like the Tesco one best, but they have also had Gerty Guinea Pig and (in an emergency) something cheap from the pet shop which looked dreadful, but they still ate it!

I guess I just don't have fussy piggies :)

I changed all mine over very slowly and gave them no choice ;) there is no waste with pellets and they cannot select feed :)

Now that mine have gotten used to the pellets they seem to eat more than they did with muesli. I get through a bag of food much quicker.

i keep saying i will go on to pellets but i still havent. i really need to though because they are fussy and leaving too many bits out. ::)

Pellets are fab. From everything i've read i think they are better for the piggies. When i got my boys last saturday they wouldnt eat anything but the food the lady gave me that they were on before (i think it was pets at home pellets). I mixed it with supa guinea excel (what my girls have) and just gave them a little less of their other food and more supa guinea every day and now they are eating everything. :)

I ran outta food for mine the other day (Johnsons every day guinea) and had to pinch some Gerty from work, the protest could be heard from outta space!
