Winifred has a lump - advice appreciated

I've just got back from dropping Winifred, along with Rosemary, at cat and Rabbit clinic for Winifred's surgery. Hoping it's nice and straightforward; Kim thought it was seemed mobile and unattached, except for a bit going towards the groin, so I hope Simon can get it all out cleanly.
As I'm at a funeral tomorrow, they are going to be boarded locally once W is able to leave the vet, until I can collect them Thursday. Poor Squeaks looks a bit lonesome in the big cage all by himself! :bye:

Healing wheeks for a successful operation and recovery for Winifred! Must be hard for you being away from her post op x

Thanks, yes, I won't be able to help worrying somewhat, even though she's in the best of hands for the surgery and the boarding lady was recommended by Debbie. But as I'm out tomorrow I'd be worrying anyway ...

Fingers firmly crossed for Winnie!

Was it Karen, the one you were boarding her with?

No, she is with Julia at Skittering Pigs. Debbie did recommend Karen also though. Jolly glad there was at least one other option for them as Debbie couldn't help.
I hope Winifred is doing well. Both Julia and Karen are great. I’m having a lovely time with the grandchildren, so couldn’t have dedicated the time needed, to caring for a post op piggy. Entertaining a 7, 5 and 2 year old is keeping me on my toes! x

Simon phoned with an update at the end of yesterday. Pleased to say the op went well. The lump was fairly large, but mostly well contained so straightforward to remove. Can't say what exactly it is, but it could still be either lipoma or benign. It's gone for histology, so in a couple of weeks we'll know for sure what it is.
Winifred wasn't given any pain relief, but the pet boarder said she had settled in well. I thought such an op would need pain relief after, but I guess I'm wrong.
Thanks all for your healing vibes x!

She’d have been given pain relief by injection immediately post op, but I’ve always been told to continue it for a few days. Ring the practice to check. I wonder if they thought you had some.

Glad you're having a good time! Sounds like you'll need a rest after. :xd:

Yes she had the jab. I asked Kim about after when I took her in, she said they probably wouldn't, but I can ask for some if needed. Julia says she has some metacam available if Winifred is showing signs of pain.

Ah, that's okay! I guess a lot of our piggy ops have been tooth/abscess related, which are more likely to be painful for a few days.
I'm having a lovely time with the grandchildren, but yes, I'm going to be totally exhausted once they return home!

I thought a cut and stitches in the tummy would be painful, but I don't have any personal experience to go by - whereas Simon and Kim do of course. I'll monitor her for signs of pain when she's back with me, but hope she doesn't have any.

I'm surprised none was prescribed, but if you say Kim had already said it probably wouldn't be, then I'm guessing she was thinking it wouldn't be needed. I gave Metacam for a few days after Lorenzo had his eye removed.

Just back from collecting Winnie and Rosemary from Northampton. I think they were glad to be back home, and Squeaks was glad to see them too - in a boarly kind of way ;)
Winifred looks comfortable, she jumped straight in the hay tray and started munching. Hopefully healing is underway and pain relief won't be needed. In a couple of weeks we'll find out from the histology report what the lump was etc.

So pleased to hear everything is going well for Winnie. I've got my fingers crossed for her that the lump is gone, done and dusted. X

I got back a little while ago after taking Winifred for her post op check and to get the results of the tests on the lump (surgery was a month ago, but I've been too busy with the house move to go earlier - though I would have gone straight away if there had been signs of complications etc).
The good news is, that the lump was not cancerous :yahoo:. It was some other kind of swelling, possibly produced in reaction to some unknown internal 'insult'; steatitis and granula-something were mentioned. If left it could having continued growing, and become more uncomfortable or painful, so definitely better out than in. The report said that if the whole swelling was removed (and Simon said it was) then that should be the end of it. I just need to check her regularly for lumps in case she has a tendency to react in that way to internal issues.
The surgery site looks good and her weight is stable, so I'm relieved and happy :) Thankyou everyone for your healing vibes xx

What a great result! Was it maybe a granuloma, like Tallulah had at her abscess op site that was a bigger lump and problem than the abscess? Thats like a weird immune system over-reaction to a tiny foreign body like a parasite or splinter or in Tallulah's case her stitches, a big mass of hard scar tissue filled with fluid forms around some tiny thing...
Great news anyway :) x
