The trials of trying to find enough grass in winter from the lawn to cut for 2 very pampered indoor kept piggies. Who else is bossed around enough to do the same? I did ask hubby to leave me a long patch at the last cut but that has long gone. Home of Pampered Piggies R Us 😙

My lawn has finished 😔
I visited my parents yesterday but it was just as it was getting dark. I was able to see that their lawn has some very long lovely looking areas...I’m planning a visit with a carrier bag and a pair of scissors...

Hahaha I done that previous years and now the time has come for this year - to eye up people's grass for suitability and return with scissors. My family think I'm bonkers 🤔😆

I spent 20 mins in the garden today with the scissors cutting the best bits of grass I could find, plus a few dandelion leaves. Happy piggies.😄
Yep. Come rain or shine. Two weeks ago I cut grass lollies (had a high of -0.5 degrees). Had to wait for it to defrost and dry out before feeding it, to some very vocal complaints!

We seem to have grass everywhere at the moment. I'm still cutting grass from the lawns everyday. When it's wet I spread it on newspaper in the kitchen to dry it off. Apparently while I was away over Christmas my lovely OH has been doing the same. I didn't expect him to go that far in his piggie duties! My lovely neighbour gave me 2 boxes of grass to cut that he's growing to patch his lawn in the spring. I have some boxes growing in the more sheltered part of the garden in the hope when the bad frosts come those keep growing. I came home from a few days away to discover a kitchen full of little flys, we think the warm sun on the kitchen window this afternoon hatched them from the soil I had grass growing in on the window ledge. The things we do for piggies!

Yes I’m out still cutting grass! I go out for a walk to the village hall, I have found a great source there, lovely long thick bladed grass, my boys love it! Roll on spring and they can get in their run 😉

Hi. I know it's been year since last post...
But, I wonder what you do with grass during winter. I mean, it's always wet. How do you dry it to prepare for piggies? I grow some cat grass, but they would eat that 2wks of work in 2 minutes...
Also, I remember wanted to ask if it's truth or myth that wet grass upsets their stomach. I've heard it as a child and so far never seen concrete black on white that confirms it. My boys were last on the grass back in end of September, after that it was too cold or wet. I managed to cut grass with scissors until few weeks back when the grass is just wet 24/7...
Give me your tips and tricks!

You could lay it on newspapers or kitchen paper and let it dry out?

:agr:
I spread it out on newspapers to let it warm up a little and dry off before feeding, but if they are used to grass then feeding it slightly wet won't cause a problem.

I have always given it semi wet and never had a problem with upset tummies. The best tip I have for taking some of the water away is:

Put a hand full of grass in a good sized poly bag or freezer bag
Place one sheet of kitchen paper in there too
Shake about for 30 seconds

It doesn’t remove all the water but does mop up a good amount.

Thanks everyone. I've been towel drying it before cutting with scissors and then letting it dry on newspapers. Just wondered if you had any other tips as I look like a crazy lady doing it!
I actually remember they used to believe wet grass caused bloat.

I'll be good piggie slave and trim the grass with no unnecessary commentary...

I give my piggies grass straight from the garden, even when it has rain or dew on it, and I've never had any issues with upset tummies. But @Wiebke did tell me once that she didn't give wet grass to hers to avoid tummy problems, so I don't know if I've just been lucky ...

I just give my damp grass a quick dry with kitchen paper as some of piggies can react with soft poos to eating damp grass when they are not used to having it daily and have had time to slowly adapt. Some piggies are more sensitive than others.

I have 4 trays of grass growing in my windowsill to feed the piggies and rabbit... even then theres only enough for 1 feed a fortnight lol. Been having to get lots of fresh herbs instead
