Wintering guinea pigs indoors, options

It's a nice hutch! If I was you I'd get a hutch cover to help protect from the weather. And lots of hay to keep them warm. Possibly a snugglesafe heat pad too? That's my plan

Even indoors?! They are in a large ryedale outside but worried I cannot insulate it enough for them, so this would be their winter hutch which will be next to my bedroom upstairs.

Size wise its only just over 100cm long, if i'm not mistaken...i think minimum is 140cm for 3 piggies, even if it is a double hutch... Sorry. I would go for something like a ferplast 140 or a c&c.

Looks great but I agree with jenniferanneharris you really need something bigger for 3 piggies either a 140 or 150 cage, a c&c or an outdoor run with a correx base. To see the outdoor runs I'm on about checkout:-

We have 5 piggies in 2 of these joined together. I would be ideal for 3 piggies. To get idea of set-up check out my earlier post with pictues. You can even build a small upper level for their food. See:- http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?103194-A-Different-Type-of-Run&highlight=

Mine is on wheels but if you only have a single you could put it on the floor. If you see any others make sure they have a big top opening as well as front opening. For cleaning, I just lift the frame off the correx & it's easy.

Another option if you need something totally covered (in case of dogs etc) is joining two 120cm cages side by side, bigger and potentially far cheaper (also easier to store) than a 140/150cm indoor cage too :-) I got ferplast 120 cages for £30 each used :-)

It's because of our cat that we have to have runs & cages for our piggies. After I've been applying ointment to Minky I just put her on the floor with a bowl of veggies & our dog Ozzy completely ignores her. I'm quite confident to leave her & go and make a cuppa. I like to keep her under observation for about an hour after applying the cream to make certain she doesn't try to lick it off. After an hour, it's soaked in & safe to put her back with the others.

Would you like to swap dogs? I have a yappy JRT x Westie with territorial issues and a high prey drive? Have to keep telling her "piggies are friends, not food!"

Sorry, Ozzy's days are numbered. We've had him since he was a puppy 14 years ago. He's the best behaved dog we've ever had & will be sad when his end comes. He's currently on about £160 of meds every month.

He's lucky to have you, many out there either would not or could not afford that :-) give him a hug and kiss from me (not that hell have a clue who I am, but extra hugs and kisses are never refused by a waggy tailed friend right?). My own poochie is only 6.5 yet has joint issues, stress incontinence, dental and other issues due to her genetics and the care by her previous owner. So sad, sending Ozzy millions of smooches!

Well luckily, we have Insurance for the cat & dog. Ozzy's has just gone up to £53 a month but we get back 80% of the meds but not the monthly visit so we tend to get back over £110 so we're still nearly £60 better off than not having insurance. I only wish I taken it out for Minky earlier in the year it would have been about £25 a month but what a bargain that would of been. Trouble is now, all the previous conditions will be taken into consideration so it wouldn't be worth it so I just £30 into a savings account & that's my piggy vet fund. If it ever gets to over £500 I'll spend the excess.

This thread is now a bit like Chinese whispers if you look at what it started with. lol

It's quite cheap & solid & I've used 2 of them joined together for 18 months. Originally with 4 piggies & now with 5 with a possible 1 more to be added & then I'll out the divider back in the middle & keep them as 2 trios. C&C is also good, particularly if you've got not predatory pets roaming round your house.

A good place to get the c&c grids is http://www.wayfair.co.uk/Safco-Wire...736887&tduid=b52818ee43dae9b16c4a0b2851645796

You'll get a 10% off voucher code when you register. They only have normal price listed at present but they seen to have offers on every few days when they come down to less than £25 a pack. If you get 2 packs less the 10% you should qualify for free shipping.
