We've just dropped Crumpet off at the vet hospital for xrays and nose swabs. I'm very nervous as its under GA (gas).

Please keep your fingers and toes crossed for her today.

:...

thank you, I just so hope I've done the right thing, I'll update when I hear from the vets x

I hope Crumpet is okay, fingers toesies are crossed!

The vet phoned and I can collect her from 3pm.
Apparently she has dental disease?! She gets two lots of hay a day and good quality cereal so I'm very surprised. She also doesn't dribble. So this is a shock.

The vet said also has inflamation / rhinitis of nose. Will have to wait for nose swab results. I'm really nervous about collecting her. I hope she is eating and has no complications.

I am very interested to hear what the vet explained to you when you collected Crumpet. Glad she came through the GA ok, I hope she settles back home well.

I am glad that Crumpet has made it well through GA and is hopefully safely back home now!

Thanks all of you for your kind messages. I picked Crumpet and Doughnut up about an hour and half ago. They were both very stressed. They are back in their indoor cage now. Crumpet came out of the GA around 2pm. The hospital said they hadn't seen her eat since she'd been out of GA.

I put her and Doughnut back in their indoor cage, and I'm just keeping an eye on them. Crumpet ate a very small amount of cereal (about two pieces), which is better than nothing. But she hasn't eaten her favourite veggies that I've put in there and I even found some grass under the snow and washed it (they haven't had grass for a while) and neither of the pigs have shown interest in it. They are both in the igloo together I think very stressed from today.

I bought some critical care just in case, how long should I give Crumpet to eat a bit more before I try and syringe feed her. I don't want to get her out of the igloo at the moment as they are never in the igloo together but they must want to be together at the moment.

I really hope she starts eating properly soon, I can't relax and got a stinking headache from worrying.....
Thanks again for all your messages x

Just an update on Crumpet, she was quite quiet and sleepy when we got her home last night, She's been hiding in the igloo a lot. She sounds very congested in the nose now, but the vet said to expect her to sneeze and sound like this as she has had something up her nose during the general anesthetic.

I picked some fresh grass for them last night and doughnut ate the lot, Crumpet wasn't interested (which is strange because she hasn't had grass for a while). She wasn't really coming out last night so I got her out the cage and she snuggled on me (usually she is a fidget and doesn't really cuddle up and stay still). But she did last night. I took the water bottle off the cage and held it up to her and she drank quite a bit whilst on my lap. I gave her some cucumber on my lap and she ate it and a bit of parsley. But it seems like she only comes out and eats when I lift the igloo. If I take it away she comes out and eats some cereal. I'm wondering if she is still a bit sleepy and that I wake her up when I take the igloo away and she then thinks about eating.! :)

I'll know how she is for sure at 5pm today when I give them their dinner, if she doesn't get excited or interested then I'll know she definitely isn't back to her normal self. But she is eating so I'm not overly worried at the moment.

I'm glad she came round from the GA ok. Hopefully she will start eating normally again soon. Fingers crossed for you :)

It's possible that her appetite loss is an after effect of the GA, although I would expect it to wear off in the next few hours at most.

Have you started syringe feeding? Sometimes a syringe feed is enough to spark the appetite again, and if not, you know syringe feeding really is necessary. I can email a factsheet about syringe feeding if you needed any help with that, must admit I can't remember if I've sent it to you before or not! mallethead

its ok she just got excited about dinner (begging etc). She seems almost back to her normal self. Phew :) thanks for everyones help. I'll let * know the results of nose swabs etc next week x x

Could you please send me the factsheet on syringe feeding anyhow please. Ive really struggled with it in the past, and really hope I never have to do it again. But would be handy to have factsheet just in case. Thanks :-)

Hello, just thought some of you might be interested in Crumpets results. I sent the vet some Questions and he has provided some answers. Please see below (I've cut and pasted it) - my questions are in red, the vets answers are in black:

I'm emailing you as I need to get things a bit clearer in my head as I find that mobile phones have bad reception and I can't always hear what you are saying. Also its easier to ask lots of questions by email

I think you said that what is going on with Crumpet is bacterial. But I think you also said there are other issues. What are these other issues? Would something bacterial be contagious to other guinea pigs, as I need to know if I could ever introduce other pigs to her if her companion goes first.
There are bacteria there and Pasteurella is probably significant. However, this bacterium can be found in normal guinea pigs too so it probably only causes disease if there's something else allowing it too- typically damage from dental disease. It is unlikely to be contagious - few bacteria are.

Are antiobiotics i.e. baytril the only course of action, and is this only the course of action if her nasal problem worsens or sounds like its on her chest.Antibiotics will help but they are addressing only the secondary problem- not the primary one which is dental disease. That's why we have a bacterium that is sensitive to the drugs already used, yet problems continue

When I spoke to you on the phone after she had seen you a week or two ago, you mentioned something about dental disease. Do you still think this - and what does this actually mean? I've heard that some guinea's teeth grow too much and need filing down (is this what you mean) - or is it a different problem with her teeth? - Is it anything to worry about?
Crumpet has dental disease. There are no changes in the mouth (the crowns) so filing is not needed - yet. Howeveer the roots are altered and infected which is why you have the problems you see. These will need re-treating as they flare up

Did you check fluid around the lungs on the xray - if so did that show anything up or were you x-raying her teeth?
Also was there anything that really concerned you or can she be expected to live a 'normal' lifespan.
Her chest looked fine
Re lifespan - it is very hard to say. i think it will shorten her life, but how much depends on how it progresses and how she copes and responds to therapy each time

So that is the diagnosis. I'm kind've pleased I've got more of an idea of whats going on, but I'm frustrated as there is nothing we can do to help her at the moment. She is happy and healthy at moment and eating well. I suppose I just have to wait for the day to come when I see a change, and then take her back to the vets for some antibiotics or teeth treatment. I'm kind've confused that it isn't contagious as I've lost one pig (2.5 yrs old) to a similar thing when I introuduced Crumpet and Doughnut to her, and Doughnut has also had wet nose from time to time. Both my pigs wipe their noses with their feet as if quickly wiping any wetness away..

Any one else had a similar diagnosis? What happened with your pig?
