I sadly and unexpectedly lost my beloved Connie on Friday. She was one half of a pair of older ladies affectionately known as Hinge & Bracket. Her partner in crime is my smallest but feistiest piggy Violet. They were extremely well bonded and spent hours grooming each other. As a pair they would not accept any outsiders despite my attempts to bond them with others in the past.

Violet (aka the pocket rocket) is now alone and very subdued. Since she has now been spayed she is less hormonal and feisty and I'm hoping that as a singleton she may be more willing to live with someone other than Connie. So today I am setting up a bonding pen and I'm going to try to introduce Violet to Mollie and Mabel.

Wish me luck please!

Good luck with bonding - it is always a shame that you can't explain to the 'challenging' piggies that they would be better off to just chill out. Hopefully she will be OK now she is less hormonal:hug:

Good luck!

Violet you sound just like my Mallow- be a good girl today!

Xx

Well, I tried. And I failed. But at least I tried !

Exactly like mallow! She got on well with crunchie, knew crunchie was the boss and never challenged it. To fudge, she wasnt just dominant she was a bully!

Removed her from crunchie and fudge (my 2 original pigs, one is always the boss and the other is always the most submissive) but they get on beautifuly.. Crunchie looks after fudge, grooms her and never bullies.

Tried pairing mallow with others- always far too dominant. She woukdnt even back down with a neutered male!

I tried her with a 12 week old baby sow and they just clicked. She keeps the baby in check but doesnt bully (finally!)

May be something worth trying x

Thanks @Adelle
Violet and Mollie are both hugely dominant. Neither would back down and it ended in a big full on fight. Interestingly baby Mabel got on fine with both of them and ran and tried to hide when the big girls kicked off. So I'm thinking that a young / baby sow is the way to go.
I didn't have high hopes, knowing my ladies as well as I do, so I'm not surprised.

I still think you should try a neutered boar with either Violet or Mollie, then Mabel can go with the one who doesnt get on with a boar.

Well, we have a new inhabitant in the piggy room. Her name is Poppy. She's about 6 moths old and looks like she could be Violet's younger sister. Despite what seemed like the easiest bonding session ever at the rescue things have been less plain sailing since we've come home. Things are a little tense and there have been a few skirmishes. I'm hoping things will settle over the next few days. So watch this space.

I hope things settle down for you soon. Look forward to seeing some pigtures when Poppy has settled.

How's things going today?

Well no hair tufts ripped out today and much less rumbling and chasing. Stand offs at opposite ends of the cage but things are definitely much less tense so I'm pretty confident this will work out. I've seen a few popcorns from Poppy when she doesn't think I've been watching.

Good to hear things are settling now Vicki, such a stressful time watching it isn't it!
