Hi all,

Hello again- it's been absolutely ages since I last posted. I'm laying here unable to sleep because I'm a bit worried about my observation of my 5 year-old piggy Barry's teeth.

He has always had beautiful straight front teeth but tonight I've just noticed that one of the top teeth is crossing over the other one and is very slightly longer. The one in front is also quite yellow compared to the other ones.

Is this crossing over of top teeth likely to cause problems?

I would appreciate your thoughts.

Alex

I think you need to see a vet with Barry. It sounds like one may be broken or damaged. Any tooth problems should be dealt with promptly as he may have difficulty eating, which would then lead to other problems. :)

This definitely needs checking by a piggy savvy vet who knows what they are looking for when it comes to dental issues.

I completely agree with MargaretB. Please have him seen by a piggy savvy vet and make sure that he also checks the molars and pre-molars at the same time. Tooth problems are more frequent with older piggies, and if not treated in time, they can lead to the piggy being unable to eat and eventually die.

Unless you have a very competent vet who is experienced with teeth, I would strongly recommend to make the trip to Northampton to the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic. Simon Maddock is a vet who is excellent with teeth problems and fiddly ops. He does all the teeth for the Excellent Adventure Sanctuary. I use him too whenever I have a problem that may involve dental/GA/op or mystery problems, especially with my older piggies. You couldn't be in better hands with a dental problem!

PS: Please monitor the weight daily, as opposed to weekly. Dental piggies tend to eat more slowly, so just watching them eating can be misleading.

Thank you for all your replies + advice. Especially the info about the piggy-savvy vet in Northampton! I've texted Vedra at CCT but awaiting response as I often drive past Huntingdon. I was trying to take a picture of the teeth but Barry's not having it!
I would like to get his teeth looked at but I thought I'd find him more things to gnaw on too. Trouble is Barry prefers to try to gnaw things he shouldn't like doors!

Lovely, have made an appointment to see Simon at the Northampton vets. Thanks Wiebke! I used to have a piggy with wonky teeth but they'd been like that since birth and he didn't have any eating issues (lived until grand age of 8!) But this is something new for Barry so would like to get it checked out. As the more protruding tooth is yellow with pink in places, I suspect he's damaged it somehow. Hope vet will sort him out/give me reassurance!

If anybody can sort it out and give you reassurance, it's "Uncle Simon"! Best of luck that it is just the one front tooth that has gone wrong.
