Hi there,

I just got two piggies on Wednesday. I think they are very young. I am probably overly worried, but I've been offering them vegetables and fruit and they won't touch it. They do eat the pellets and hay, though. Should I be worried? What can I do? I offered celery, lettuce, tomatos and carrots for the veggies. I offered banana, oranges and blueberries for fruit so far.

Thanks,
Nicole

I'd think that they've just never been offered fruits/veg before, so don't know quite what to do with it. All I can really suggest is continuing to offer them different things to find out what they like. You could also try gently (very, very gently) rubbing a bit of fruit or veg along their lips so they get the flavour/smell of it.

george wouldn't even eat a carrot for a few weeks. I just started with carrot kept giving daily and removing old one until they were his favourite then I moved on to other veg. I found he didn't like some but when introduced after a while he liked them too! I was dispairing for a while but it just took some time and he got the taste for them eventually :)

I would just keep offering them and taking old veggies away each mealtime.
My Mr Bunny wouldn't touch veggies for weeks when I got him as he didn't know what they were as he hadn't had them before.
They will eat them eventually.

I agree with the general consensus, they might not have been lucky enough to have been offered veggies so far!

Just keep leaving them in their hutch(es) until someone is adventerous enough to give them a try, I know mine nearly work themselves into a frenzy at veggie time now!

Indeed... my girls were lucky enough to always be given fresh veggies, but the guinea pig I had last year had never had veggie before I got her and it took her a good three weeks before she'd even start trying it. After a month and a half you could hear her halfway down the hallway of my apartment building when I got home, calling for her supper. (But how did she know it was me? All of the neighbors said she never did it when they got home around the same time of day!)

Ok. Thank you for all the advice. I guess it's kind of like them getting used to us. We are taking it very slowly and I can tell every day that they are trusting a little more. These are our first piggies and I'm really excited.

Thanks!
Nicole

when i got gilbert he was not interested in the veggies i gave him at all tooo! i think yours just isn't settled in quite yet. cause about a week later i offered veggies again to gilbert, and by then he was familiar with my voice and when its food time, and he gladly took them out of my hand and ran to take cover and eat them! so i think you should just give your gp some time. let him get used to his new home. [= have fun!

i love gilbert<3

p.s. my gilbert seems to like celery best :]

My piggies all like different fruit and veg but the one they agree on is sprouts! They will probably gain their tast buds for these delicious treats soon so dont give up..
