Hello all - new to this and seeking advice? Thinking to put some wood shavings on top of the washable liners so I don’t have to wash them so much (thid seems to upset them a bit). But I read that son’s wood shavings are bad? And paper is expensive. The hemp looks edible and I’m worried about them eating it. Advice please thanks Rob

Wood shavings are fine to use.

Do you mean you’re using fleece liners?
If so then putting anything on top of them is going to make washing them hard - everything will stick to them

If you are using a cage base such as correx or a plastic cage base, you can just put a few cm of wood shavings into it and change them weekly with daily spot cleaning. Hemp is good. They might sample a bit of the bedding, but if they always have plenty of hay, they will eat that in preference. Paper bedding isn't absorbent enough for the amount of wee a guinea pig produces and they would risk sitting in dampness. In the UK all commercial wood shavings are kiln dried and dust extracted by law so aren't hazardous.

Thanks for the advice, I am putting them on top of liners (not fleece) Amazon.co.uk
I was just putting hay on top of this but was using a huge amount of hay every day. Now putting the hat in hay carts and trays instead and sawdust on the liners. Just trying to keep them as clean as possible without upsetting them by removing smells :))
