Hi all, I am brand new here and I dont know if I'm doing this right but I have a question about my boys wooden toys.
I have 4 boars, 2 per 16sq ft of space (the cages that house each pair are side by side and they seem to enjoy that) and they have a plethora of wooden chews and toys, oxbow pellets and 50/50 Timothy and orchard hay unlimited, fresh veg everyday, and floor time (not together) at least 4 days a week but I usually aim for 6. (I'm not sure if any of that is relevant)
So they have all kinds of toys, wooden, cardboard, paper, etc.. but the wooden ones are being literally destroyed in days. Like, whole chunks missing out of the wood. I removed them from the cage because I thought they were more supposed to gnaw, not actually eat the wood. I had 2 boars previously that lived to be almost 8, and I dont recall having this issue.
Is it safe to put the toys back in/normal that they're eating the wood? I just worry that itll be sharp and cause internal damage. Sorry for the dumb question! Just want my piggies safe!

I personally don’t really like wooden chew toys for that reason! we just give them toilet roll tubes and they will happily destroy that and I know it’s safe!

Thank you for your reply! I have lots of cardboard in too, I work at a factory so I get lots of plain cardboard from work and their houses are made of boxes with holes cut, and they just seem bored with just the cardboard. I will maybe try making a toy from cardboard but with the style of one of the wooden ones.

You can stuff them with hay, maybe with a treat, some forage or veg hidden in the middle. Have a look at the enrichment thread I’ve linked below. And :wel:

Thank you! I have some bedding that I use for my mouse, (just shredded paper) and was thinking of adding some of that to a low sided cardboard box and hiding some veg and hay inside. I love watching them play and am always on the hunt for new enrichment. And thanks for the welcome!
