A couple of weeks ago we found some worm like things in the pigs Harrington's Optimum and in their bowls. I binned a nearly new 10kg bag and bought a 2kg one from the supermarket assuming it was the supplier as this was the second bag this year.

Today we have found worms again in the bowls and this time in the Natures Own nuggets. Could this be related to the rats dying under our floorboards rather than a supply issue?

If it is two different makes of food it would suggest it is not a supply issue.i would suggest you maybe change the bowl and location of stored food.maybe store in an airtight container.I'm sorry you are having difficulties especially with rats.:(

Could the rats be getting in to the cage and near the bowl, bringing maggots or something with them?

I've heard of rats getting into the most airtight of cages and they can be quite dangerous to the pigs. Maybe set up a camera to catch them in the act?

Sorry you're going through this!

We've had the council out and the rats are definitely eating the poison that's down in the outside toilet but there's been no activity on the access point into the kitchen since we started poisoning the little blighters. We are assuming that the reason we can smell decomposing bodies is because they are getting into the fireplace wall. It's daft really - we moved from the countryside 2 years ago and never had this scale of problem before!

if the pellet contains flour and cereals that is the reason of the presence of worms. Our homes in Italy are often invaded by worms and little butterflies when we keep pasta and flour out the fridge. I had this trouble last year and I was driving crazy... If now you have this insect around your house (and it can be hidden) you will have problems as soon as you leave some cereal around. You should keep the bag of pellets in the fridge and it would be better to store it into the freezer after the purchase.
Another advice: cereals and flours are bad for guinea pigs... therefore maybe it is a luck if you have to throw now all the pellets away...
Of course I am talking of certain worms I have had at home (found into oat flakes, pasta, rice, pellets for cats... a disaster!)

I definitely recommend a plastic container or moving the food indoors.

Years ago my neighbour blamed our piggies for causing a rat problem in their bird aviary. But we had no rats in the piggy shed or food, go figure!

I keep my 10kg of food in a plastic container in the garage it's called Pets Pantry and I got it from Pampered Pets. I fill up a Klik lock box for everyday use that lasts around 3 weeks. I have had the corner of a 10kg bag nibbled in the garage before so I bought the Pets Pantry and haven't had a problem since.

We have the chicken's food in big plastic tubs that we had from Jacobi Jayne in the garage - not seen the Pets Pantry ones, will have a look. Thanks for your help
