Just before I went to bed last night I was putting hay in my guinea pigs cage and something spooked Abigail and she jump and twisted and ran inside one of the pigloos. First thing this morning I noticed her moving tentatively and just moving a few steps out of her hidey, she had not been out for water or nuggets through the night, I put some grass, cucumber and lots of hay next to her this morning and she eating well. Abigail has always been the more confident one, she normally is wheeking for food constantly but she has not made any noise at all this morning I am so worried about her. I have made her an appointment at the vet for this afternoon.

Hi!

Guinea pigs can badly spooked by something we cannot perceive with our duller hearing and much less sensitive sense of smell.
They generally come round within a day or two if you just leave them be and allow their triggered prey animal instincts to settle down again as long as she is not showing signs of an injury (limping etc).

Please do not worry - healthy piggies will eat and even one night of not eating quite as much is not going to harm Abigail; she is very likely to come out under the safety of darness. Place a blanket over the cage to give her an added feeling of security and do not fuss over her constantly but observe from a distance. Just keep to the normal feeding regime.

Thank you Wiebke,
Went to the vets they think Abigail maybe a little sore as not moving as much as normal, they prescribed Loxicom 0.3 ml twice daily. I feel really guilty as I think I spooked her when putting her hay in last night, she had just got really confident with me, I feel I have set her back a little.
I will put a cover over half the cage and just keep an eye on her.
Thank you again.

I have spooked my sow about 4 times before, once she took about 4 days to trust coming out again. I found offering coriander was good for winning her trust back again. All i did was kicked over a bag of hay

Use our piggy whispering tips to speed up the bonding process but start it from scratch with signalling you want to be friend with her; that she is part of your group and that you love her. Be patient; you will get there!

Update on Abigail.... After all your wonderful advice, I kept the cage half covered for two days only removing to give food ,meds and water, after this I started the piggy whispering tips starting from scratch. I am delighted to say Abigail is back to her old mischievous self and really confident again. Thank you all so much for your help.
