I had my boys out the sofa on Thursday night for their usual cuddles, but I noticed Dylan didn't want to be touched, he just seemed a little moody to me, so I put them back in their cage. 20 mins later I was in their room and I noticed Dylan had fur missing on one side. I hadn't noticed it when I got the boys out for cuddles, so I presume it happened as I put him back, my other half said it was almost as though something on us had set off an allergic reaction.

I did some research and found it looked like mange mites. That night I ordered some products from gorgeous guineas to help soothe his skin, and after researching the different ivermectin, I went for beaphar, as I knew I could get it the next day. I also bought some anti fungal spray but I'm yet to use that.

Now he has fur missing on his tummy and the other side now, and he's still scratching, although he seems brighter than he did on thurs/Friday. The impression I got with ivermectin though is that it was pretty quick in dealing with the problem, but I'm more upset at the fact he could be pain. Should I just take him to the vets? The cost is not an issue obviously, even if the vet was to prescribe xeno450 at a higher price than I could find online, I don't care really, I don't want him suffering more than he should. The pigs are having floor time now and he keeps trying to popcorn about but stops to have a scratch  I've included a pic but the quality isn't great.

It looks like that on his tum too.

Hi!

Please have him checked by a vet to make sure that you have got the right diagnosis. Fungal can show very similar symptoms, much more than you than you would think from the example pictures! If you home treat on spec, you can easily make things worse rather than better.

Be aware that beaphar is too low dosed to be really effective; it is geared more towards the prevention, not the treatment of mites. Xeno450 for piggies over 800g is appropriately dosed to do the trick and worth the wait once you have made absolutely sure that you have got the right culprit. Personally, I prefer a full course of 3-4 injections at my vets for any piggy that is actively infested by mange mites as the most effective way of dealing with mites.

You also need to treat the full course of at least three rounds at the recommended interval in order to kill off any emerging eggs and you need to treat any piggies in contact with your mites piggy.

I took both my boys as I thought I'd best get them both checked out. Dylan was treated with xeno450 and Mouse got xeno50 is it? They are back in two weeks for another round, and the vet took samples of his skin to check for mites but she said she was pretty certain it was mites. No antibiotics or anti inflammatories as she thought he didn't need them but I'm to go back if I think he does. She said it will be a few days before I see an improvement.

Thanks guys :) both are happily munching on hay as I write this. At least this hasn't out them off their food!
