Worried about Eliza - Serious eye injury

It really is nasty and so unfair :( No timescale has been given but they are checking her twice a week unless I am concerned beforehand. I'm not being charged for any of these vets visits so it isn't even like they're getting any money out of me.

No change in antibiotics yet but it looks like Eliza is finally responding. Another visit on Monday to reassess.

Bless her poor little love. Fingers and paws crossed Eliza is responding to the med's...such a long road fro you both. I'm sure when she is all healed up it will all seem worth it... Poor little piggie.
 
Having seen how quickly Zithromax works on pus, compared to baytril, I really think it would be worth seeing if your vet would consider using it. I'm sure you would see a huge improvement in a very short time. If your vet wanted to speak with Simon first, he would be more than happy to talk things through. xx

Hi All.

Sorry I haven't updated sooner but I have only just got the internet back fully after moving house and am having a bit of time out.

I just wanted to let you all know that after a long and emotional eight weeks, Eliza is doing pretty good *touch wood*.

She has been off her antibiotics for just over a week now and her eye is resembling that of what you would expect a guinea pig who has lost an eye to look like.

The eye cavity itself has filled and is still in the process of filling up with new granulated tissue. She is still having a slight bit of gunk which I have been told is normal discharge from a healing would and not to worry. When I say wound, there isn't much there anymore as like I say, the eye cavity is almost closed up now.

I re bonded Eliza back with her friends just over a week ago and she is now living permanently back in the shed with them. There have been some teething problems with them pushing her around and she is now bottom of the group but she has been accepted and they are all slowly adjusting as Eliza is more wary than she once was after losing half her sight and living alone for six weeks.

Eliza is back at the vets on Friday when hopefully she will be discharged to finally enjoy her life again so please keep your fingers crossed.

Thank you to everyone who has offered their support. All the messages and replies to this thread have meant a lot and me and Eliza appreciate them all.

I am afraid to say that our Poor Ruby had to be helped on her way over the bridge at the weekend.
I don't know whether it was all connected but she started with a head tilt, then we had a problem with her eye as you know, the head tilt and balance problems returned last week and we took her back to the vets because she was having trouble eating too, she was xrayed and nothing obvious showed on the xray.
However over the weekend she was refusing even syringe feeds and was slowly losing weight, so we thought it was kinder to see her over the bridge than to see our friend suffer. I am missing her terribly as she would greet me all the time with a squeak when she heard my voice and used to love a cuddle too.
She was cremated yesterday and is now running free with Archie over the rainbow bridge.

Aww Sharon. I am truly sorry :( But you gave her a fighting chance and she seemed to recover so well after her op. You could do no more.

When a piggy stops eating, they really are poorly and it sounds like Ruby had under laying problems.

Hi all.

Just to update that Eliza has been discharged from the vets today :) All three vets who were in came to see her and said in the nicest possible way that they hope not to see me there again for a while. I am their unluckiest client so far this year which figures. :(

All my piggies had nail trims and health checks so fingers crossed x

Thank you, I can't come to terms with it, she was so special, she had a bad start in life, she was a rescue piggie that was starving during pregnancy, her babies are small even now. It is so quiet without her as she would squeak if I came in the room, and now nothing.

It is so hard when we lose a piggy :( The fact that she had a bad start was made much better by you giving her a loving home and she couldn't have asked for more.

I hope that you manage to come to terms with losing her in your own time x

Eliza has been back with her friends for nearly two weeks now :) There have been some teething problems and she is now at the bottom but she's here and that's all that matters x

Yes I agree, so long as she is getting better, that is all that matters.

I'm not sure if I am stressing out for no reason but I am stressing out :(

Eliza's eye sometimes produces a clear discharge that dries a very pale yellow crust. I have spoken to my vet who has said not to worry as it is just serum producing as the wound heals and just to carefully wipe it off with hibi scrub if there is a lot. It doesn't smell but I worry the infection is back although surly that wouldn't happen at this late stage? But after all these weeks, should it still be producing serum as each new layer grows?

Where the eye socket itself is closing up, the granulation is a healthy pink skin colour but I still worry.

I have heard that deep wounds can take months to heal and close up fully and considering Eliza's was an open eye socket, I guess that can be classed as a deep open wound?

I just can't bare the thought of anything going wrong at this late stage after everything she has been through.

Apart from this yellowish crust, Eliza is doing well x
 
Oh no! As you know..I know what you are going through although Lacey is much much better. The vet did warn me that she may have some clear discharge and not to worry about it, just gently bath as you have been doing so try to not to worry (she says!)..I do wonder if Hibi Scrub is a little harsh though? Perhaps just plain warm water? Or even dilute salt water? Someone who is very experienced did say to me that depending on what they do with the tear duct (remove or leave) this can also weep? I think Lacey's has been removed with the eye but worth checking with Eliza?

I am pleased Lacey is doing much better. You must be relieved and I hope she continues to do well.

I think I just worry about Eliza so much and I haven't seen any of the clear fluid for a while now so it worried me to see it again especially when it dries crusty.

I started of using cooled boiled salt water but was given the hibi scrub as her wound was open so it kept it clean and because I had to keep removing the pus, the hibi scrub lifted it off easier than the salt water but now she doesn't have the open wound as such as just the discharge, I may go back to using the salt water.

That's a good point regarding the tear duct. I'm pretty sure hers was removed as well but I will double check as I know some vets leave them in xx
 
Thats fine :-) Yes, maybe the warm water may be better. Hibi Scrub can be quite drying although, as you say, great for difficult wounds.
I hadnt even thought about what actually happens to the tear duct until my friend mentioned it, its such a lot to take in and think about. I could never be a vet though...waayyy to yucky!

I am sure she will be fine but its best to check is'nt it? I would be just like you, I get so anxious its laughable. I have to go out or I drive the poor piggy mad!

Yes Lacey is being rather cheeky now and seems to be coping very well, I have had to remove her friend for a while as she was attacking her, actively looking for her and generally grumpy! She is now attacking her fleece and the cardboard tube I have given her. I think she is bored rolleyes. I wish I could put her out with the others but I just know they will be too boisterous and a knock to the wound or a visit from the 'stitch removal team' would be a disaster.

Thank you, I will do.

I have cleaned her her up with warm water (it is actually stuck in her fur and not in the wound thank goodness) but she was getting stressed so I will try her again tomorrow.

Lacey sounds cheeky and yes, she could be board but you are doing the right thing, I wouldn't put her back with her friends yet. Does she have dissolvable stitches or does she have to have them removed?
