Hi, my piggie Gertie is about 3 years old and she intermittently bleeds from her rear end. Last year it happened and the vet queried Pyometra and operated but there was nothing found. It happened again in Feb and it has started again. She has been to the vets and they can’t see/feel anything wrong. It’s not in her urine but is seeping from somewhere. She is eating, drinking, weight is stable and otherwise ok. She doesnt make any noise when she is being examined or at any other time. I even thought at one point she may have got a paper cut from her bedding. It’s not dripping from her constantly but there are tiny bits on the paper. I really don’t know what to do. Can anyone help, thanks

I'm afraid I have no expertise but wondered if it might be worth seeing a different vet.Is your vet experienced with guinea pigs?

Hi, thanks for your reply. this is the 2nd vet as weren’t happy with the first one (long story) - I’m really happy with our current vets - they are piggy savvy to a point, but they refer to specialists if they are unsure. I have booked another appointment to see what they say x

Glad you've got a decent vet.Where abouts are you located? There is a great vet in Northampton who is brilliant for diagnostics. Are you in the UK?

My girl had something similar and it was a uterine tumour, and the same has happened to @SkyPipDotBernie who’s waiting for an op to remove it.

My Pepper was operated on end of last year and she’s made a full recovery. But it did take a good few months to diagnose as vets first thought it was a UTI then ovarian cysts. However, it would seem strange if that was your girl’s problem when she’s already had her womb examined in surgery...

Thanks everyone- I am in the UK - Birmingham. It started on thursday when I saw it on her bedding and I took her to the vet Friday. She had a bit on the paper and her bottom yesterday and the same today but nothing since this morning, although she may have cleaned herself. I just can’t work out where it’s coming from - I’m sooooo stressed

Sure it isnt intertestial cystitis? Non an infection so not dangerous, no cure for it, its just annoying and uncomfortable for your pig. ( it does go eventually unless the problem outlives your pig)You could try some cystease for her. Pets at home sell it. Its for cats with cystitis.

Forgot to mention. Intertestial cystitis only gets diagnosed after everything else has been eliminated. So could well be this

Thank you - it’s possible. I have just had her out on a white towel and she did a wee and normal poos - no blood whatsoever and her bottom was clean - I wish they could tell us how they feel x

My vet thought Dot ( my 3 year old sow) has intertestial cystitis, turns out it wasnt. But your pig has already had an op, so i think yours could have i.c.

Mention this to your vet

I’ve just picked up Gertie and she had a gloopy string of blood hanging from her bottom and more blood staining - Is there any way I can tell if it’s from her bottom or vagina? I can’t really work it out looking at anatomy pictures. It’s definitely not in her wee or poo but I still can’t work out where it’s coming from.
I have my vet appointment 2moro - I’m wondering if a spay might be an option or if it an ovarian cyst. Sorry I’m being a stress bunny this morning again x

My sow is being spayed, same symptoms, she has a uterine growth thats being removed, hopefully.

Is your sow straining to poo?

My sow has been like this since june 2018. Took a long time to diagnose

Aww I’m sorry - poor thing - when does have her op? ☹️ Gertie doesn’t strain at all - there are no other signs that anything is wrong except for this intermittent bleeding x

I would look into cystitis or intertestial cystitis with your vet. 👍. Her op is early may, i have had to plan it, so that i have time off work to do recovery feeds if need be

I have no experience of this, but just wanted to offer support, hope Gertie is ok and you get to the bottom of it.

Evening all , I took Gertie to the vets and he examined her thoroughly but he can’t see or feel anything wrong, so we are going to watch and wait as there are no other symptoms and there has been no more bleeding. He didn’t think it was IC, but I’ve got to watch what she eats as he thinks it may be coming from her bottom and may be a reaction to something she is eating eg colitis. If she gets worse I will take her back and they will give her a scan but fingers crossed at the moment she is a very happy piggy - eating and drinking normally , no temperature, no blood in her wee, no squealing - nothing. I do hope it stays that way xx

Fingers crossed everything is ok x

I have experienced bleeding every now and then over the years with one of my guinea pigs when she wees but it has never got any worse than when I first noticed it about 3 years ago. I only noticed due to the fact I keep them on fleece. A vet suggested to me that occasionally guinea pigs can have a bleed when they have a season but not all do this maybe be the case. I'm not an expert in this though but thought it was worth a mention.

Thank you - I’m still obsessively checking her and the bedding just in case - but so far she is ok xx

I was the same with mine. Fingers crossed it isn't anything to sinister, but good to keep an eye out for these things. After all better to get problems resolved sooner rather than later
