She has been loosing weight and generally been not quite right. She is pooing(very little poos), weeing and is eating but slowly as if it is tiring her out. I took her to the vets on Tuesday and he checked her wee. It had a high pH, blood and protein. He said cystitis and gave her baytril but that it could also be kidney failure and bring her back in 5 days. Since then she has just got weaker and lost more weight. She was really tucking into the recovery food on Wednesday but today she didn't want it. So far today I have seen her eat a bit of hay, half a lettuce leaf and 2mls of recovery goo. I think if I ring the vets they will say let the baytril have more time to work but I'm not sure it is doing much.

I think you need to go back to the vets as once a guinea pig gives up eating there is something wrong. Is your vet cavy savvy? Might be worth seeing another vet if not as a lot of vets don't have a clue sadly.

Poor Kizzy. She definitely needs the vets again. I would look at switching to Septrin if it is a suspected UTI as it works better for urinary problems. Look at getting a wee sample cultured to see if it is a bacterial infection also and get a X-ray done to rule out stones.

Baytril can sometimes cause them to go off their food a little as it is harsh on the guts. If she is not eating you will need to syringe feed recovery food or critical care aiming for 120ml in 24 hours. Please weigh her daily and Weigh before and after feeding. Do you have any probiotics in?

A tip for syringe feeding they we found a god send last month, is to cut the end off a 1ml syringe, this makes it easier to suck up syringe feed and you are less prone to it squirting out to fast which can be dangerous.
Sending Kizzy lots of healing vibes x

She has been back to the vet. He can't find anything wrong with her, teeth ok, no lumps or bumps, clear lungs. The current theory is she has a UTI which has made her feel run down and that has caused her to not eat so much which has made her feel worse. He said keep up with the baytril for a week and see how she goes and he gave her some multi vitamins and steroids. She did some better poop on the way to the vets so she has been eating when I have not been looking. She has had some of her tea, carrot, pepper, cucumber and rocket, but only a little of each. Charlotte is currently cleaning her.
Sport_billy, I had been using a cut off syringe for her recovery goo. It was pellet dust, friend poo with friendly bacteria in it and cranberry juice. I don't know how I would get 120ml in her. I had a real fight with her this morning just to get 2ml down her, I felt really bad forcing it down her so I gave up. She was spitting it out anyway. I have been weighing her at the same time every morning and she lost 20g in 2 days.

The weight loss isn't huge for 2 days, she's definately getting stuff in her. Syringe feeing when they dont like it is so tough to do - Maybe look at getting some Critical Care by oxbow, ours love the taste or failing that - mushed up pellets go down well. He gave he a shot of steroid?
It is good she had some tea. Lots of healing vibes to her x

Yeah, he said the steroid would help build muscle and help make the best use of whatever she did digest. She is so bony poor little thing.

Slow eating and weight loss can be an indication of tooth problems. Has your vet checked her back teeth for spurs?

Please hand feed/top her up her with recovery Food or mushed pellets, about 120ml over the course of 24 hours.

Hiya healing vibes to kizzy from the girl's&I. Xx
When Ellie was off her food at the beginning of the year, I was going out picking fresh grass & dandelions to try &tempt her to eat again... Luckily it worked. She wasn't keen on the oxbow or probiotics I tried to give her!
Small poops can be a sign of gut stasis, definitely try 2 get her eating anything she will accept! Coriander Leaves & cucumber were also a godsend. x

Hope Kizzy starts to feel better soon. I agree with Wiebke that teeth may need further investigation, maybe x-rays. Good luck. :)

How is Kizzy? x

I'm afraid that Kizzy didn't make it. I found her on Sunday morning, I wasn't really expecting it as despite the worry on Friday she had appeared to perk up a bit on Saturday. She is buried at the bottom of the garden next to her sister. I just hadn't really felt up to coming on here till now.

Oh no :( So sorry to read this. Sleep well little one x
