Sorry everyone this is a bit of a long one!

My 2 year old boar Simba started making weird chewing movements with his mouth on Saturday and seemed more lethargic than normal. He was trying to eat but his veggies were coming out of his mouth. I weighed him and he is 150g down.
I contacted the exotic vets and we took him for a consultation.
The vet did bloods there and then and looked at his mouth but said that it’s more than likely dental and that he would need to be put under for a thorough check with a view to surgery.
The vet said that the bloods were normal so no sign of kidney problems etc.

The following day Simba had X-rays and they showed one slightly elongated tooth at the back and a vet small spur. Both were dealt with whilst he was under. He also had a patch of raw skin on one cheek.
His whole body was x rayed and there were no problems apart from slightly arthritic knees.

However the vet feels that the main cause of the problem is that on the back of his throat there are a few white bumps leading him to believe that it could be a throat infection. The vet himself said that it was all a bit of a mystery.

Simba has been given the following meds-
Metacam
Paracetamol
Ranitidine for gut motility
Co trimoxazole for the infection.
I am syringe feeding him 10ml Emeraid every four hours.

Simba is very lethargic and just sits in the same spot in his surround with his brother. He is eating minimal amounts by himself. His mouth is making a crunching/ grimding noise when he chews.

Am I expecting too much as it’s not quite 24 hours yet?
He has a check up again on Tuesday.
The vet is an experienced exotic so I have trust in what he said but I feel so helpless and worried about him.

Can anyone give any reassurance? I’ve barely slept with anxiety over him.
Thank you.

Hi. I’m so sorry Simba is poorly. A vet nurse said to me once when I had a piggy have bladder surgery that he should be up and walking about by the following afternoon. So for peace of mind I wouldn’t leave it too long if you are worried. My piggy unfortunately had an adverse reaction to the anaesthetic.

It’s also advised to keep them warm (but not hot) after surgery. A half heated snuggle safe is good.

Good luck I hope he’s soon back to his normal self.

Thank you we are taking him back today at 3.45 as I am worried about him.

Good luck. I hope it’s just him getting over the anaesthetic. But it’s definitely better to get it checked out sooner rather than later. Sending healing vibes ❤️

He is currently being incubated and given fluids and critical care at the vets. The exotic doesn’t think it’s the anaesthetic that is the problem and that something isn’t right. He hasn’t pooped much at all and she can’t hear his gut moving. Yesterday his xray showed no sign of stasis.
She has mention that if the incubation is unsuccessful we may want to comsider pts. My worry is that this is too hasty but I also know something isn’t right with him? Gosh this is so so hard x

I’m so sorry. I really hope Simba responds to the care at the vets. You’ve done the right thing by getting him back to the vets ASAP.

Hi all Simba was pts. We had a lovely last cuddle. Vet suspects a brain issue or spinal infection. We are heartbroken 😢
