Hi I hope this is in the right section.
My 8 month old boar, Frazzle is booked in to be neutered tomorrow morning.
He's fit and well and I'm taking him to a recommended cavie savvy vet however I can't help but worry!
If you've had a boar neutered could you please help ease my nerves? And any tips on aftercare e.g. what should I bed him on, put the hay in, check for etc would be really helpful for me.

Thank you .
Worried mummy! :...

I kept my boy on fleece post neuter, his hay was in a litter tray near him.
He was fine when i picked him up & bar him losing a bit of weight, which he did regain, he had no problems.

Keep checking his wounds to make sure no infection is present, he should have a post-op check at the vets after 5-7 days.

This is an account of Toddie's neuter
He was neutered on the 13th Feb 2009 & came home later in the day a little quiet but alert. He did poop (not as much as normal) but did eat his veggies that night. The wounds were stitched internally & glued externally.
16.2.09 - he had his 1st post-op check, he was a little swollen & smelled of urine, tho' his appetite was back to normal. Later that night whilst inspecting his wound i noticed something not quite right with his penis. There was a large plug of semen well & truly stuck - i had no choice but to gently bathe his nether regions in warm water to dislodge it.
19.2.09 - Bathed his bottom again to remove another semen plug
20.02.09 - Had his 2nd post-op check; he was less swollen & healing well.
25.02.09 - Didn't seem himself & had lost weight altho' he was eating, drinking & pooping fine. I also found a lump on the right side, near the incision. Back to the vets where the "lump" was diagnosed as fat. The vet attributed his weight loss down to the op as it is such a major operation for a small animal & because all his other signs were fine.
Toddie's weights:
08.02.09 (5 days pre-op) - 1424g
22.02.09 (9 days post-op) - 1399g
08.03.09 (23 days post-op) - 1431g

I have had quite a few piggies neutered and they have all done well except for the first one who was very bruised and went on to develop an abcess. Since then I keep a very close eye on the wound and any if signs of excessive swelling or infection then I start them on Baytril until the wound is healed.
They tend to be a bit off for a day but soon pick up again, I also give them Metacam until the worst of the swelling has subsided.
I was interested in Nikis comment about her pigs penis. Two of mine have developed an unretracted penis post operatively and I had to gently ease it back in with a damp cotton wool bud. I suspect that all the manipulation in that area causes the penis to become erect and then it doesnt retract properly. :red Poor little sweeties!
Hope it all goes well tomorrow

I had my boy on fleece too and had his hay in a rack with a litter tray and newspaper underneath. I just checked his wound regularly to make sure he didn't get infected. He was very sleepy when I got him back, but was eating and was back to himself the next day. I would take some of Frazzles favourite veg with you so the vet can give it to him after the op to get him eating again. Good luck. I'm sure everything will be fine :)

I had Milo neutered I kept him on fleece, his hay was also in a hay rack. I got him 3 days after his neuter. The rescue neutered him using there vet. When I got him I cleaned his cage twice daily for 10days. He was fine. :)

Good luck Frazzle.

As all the above BUT ALSO: Restrict his movement for at least a week post op - small 2ft cage and no bounding/popcorning around....... to prevent the formation of adhesions...

If necessary put him side by side to side with his cage mate.....Keep an eye on his output 2-3 weeks post op and weigh him daily as adhesions forming will interfere with his guts

I'm sure he'll be OK...but just to be extra-sure....(.IYSWIM..rolleyes).

I have vet bed, do you think this would be alright? Or too fluffy? I went into town and couldn't find any fleece (small town) so bought some vet bed from work for his cage. I have one fleece which I can swap with the vet bed when it needs washing along with towels.
I was told to bring veggies, going to make him a packed lunch :) What about hay? Think I should take a mini sandwich bag of hay?
Worried I'm going to get emotional leaving him there! He's one of my babies.

Don;t worry - he is in good hand I'm sure. Take in everything he is familar with ie his hay, pellets and his favourite veggies.....(i.e. a "piggie pack") ......I also take a (piggie-scented) fleece into my vets too if my pigs are possibly staying in for more than a couple of hours.

It will help him adjust to the strange envronment and recover more quickly after the op

I took Archie some hay in a small plastic box. I didn't know whether to or not, but I wanted to make sure he had food. I had to leave at about 6am to get him there on time and then we didn't get back home til about 5pm so I didn't want him going all that time with just a cabbage leaf. I would have thought vet bed would be ok. It's more shavings and hay that could cause problems. I thought I would get emotional leaving Archie, but luckily I held it together :)).

Also I wanna ask.. I'm taking him in at 8.30, when do you think (if all goes well) I'll be able to pick him up?

Archie went in at 8.30-ish and the vet told us he would be finished about 2pm and to call them then. I think He got picked up about 4pm. Although you may be able to get Frazzle earlier if your vets is closer. I had to go on a 45 minute bus journey to get Archie to the vet :{

Hmm well in the rush hour in the morning it can take about an hour :( So I'm leaving at 7.30 to try and beat it. The vet was nice and said she understood about traffic so has given me a slot between 8.30 -9 .
I have a lesson at 1.30 at uni so I'll probably have to just have a day off .. ohhh noo! :p

A good vet will not release him until they are sure his is completely recovered from the anaesthetic..........whilst he is there he has all the facilities/care possible......so if the op is at 9am then 2pm'ish onwards is reasonable..but don;t rush....the later he is transported after his op the better....and it may be delayed because vet may have emergenecies coming in to deal with

I dropped him off with his picnic at 8.30, said goodbye.. walked out and started crying !
I know I shouldn't have but I was thinking 'that may be the last time I see him' (Thinking the worst)
They've told me to ring at 1.30 to find out how he is and when I can pick him up.
Just about to sort his cage out ready for his return.

Aww, I hope all has gone well, you'll find out soon. As I said to myself when Archie was in "No news is good news" :) Not long now...

Ok I just rung them but I'm still in the dark :( He was only just coming round from the op so they've got to check his eating, pooping etc before they'll be happy to let him go home. I want my baby!
They've told me to ring back at 4, aaaages...

BIG HUG

I find the waiting always the most difficult part of an operation. It's good to know that he has made through, though!

Yeah :( I hate the thought of him being all alone with nobody he knows! I just hope he'll forgive me. 40 minutes and counting..

Would you recommend putting a towel underneath the vet bed? Or will just newspaper be ok? Worrying rolleyes

Just rung them. Apparently he's bright and awake but hasn't eaten as much as they'd like, so I'm picking him up at 5 and they're going to go through syringe feeding in case his eating doesn't pick up. Can't wait to see him x
