Hi all,
My name is Monica and I'm new to this forum! Last Thursday, I noticed a very sore looking cut on the side of my guinea pig, Pablo's cheek, probably just under a centimetre in diameter. There were also some dandruff-like bits of dry skin on the hair on his back. Alarm bells went off pretty quickly, so I called the vet & went for a visit the following day. I was expecting it to be a fungal infection or worst case, mites, but the vet didn't seem too concerned. We were given some antibiotics (Baytril) to stop it getting infected and saline solution to clean the wound with, and some fur samples were taken to be tested for a fungal infection. This morning, while giving him his medicine, I noticed two other wounds on Pablo, this time on his back, that look very similar to the first one but are much, much smaller and were not there yesterday. I cleaned them with the saline solution we got from vets but am now very concerned. He is a dark long haired guinea pig which makes it very tricky to spot these but I am now on constant lookout! I've also been checking my other guinea pig for similar cuts, but haven't found any on him thank god. Any suggestions for what I should do?!

What did your vet think the cause was or are they first waiting for the test results? Did they tell you when to expect the test results back?

I take it there are no signs of tension or fighting with your piggies?

I would possibly call the vets to chase the test results and let them know you have found more wounds so they can advise what you need to do next. If it is fungal or mites then it's not going to get any better until appropriate treatment is given.
