worried about Winnie :/

I thought the spray might be awkward too but it's actually not. It's a small pump spray, not aerosoland you need one pump/spray per 200g of pig, so mine all need 5 each cos they're porkers! It just goes on the back of their necks, like spot on flea treatment for cats and dogs. It's not too bad at all. Better than the similar ivermectin spray I once had which was one pump/spray per 100g of pig - that's a lot of sprays for a 1200g pig!

Asked the vet about bathing them whilst they're being treated, and she said it was fine as long as I did it and dried them just before they're due a dose. So I'm going Gorgeous Guineas shopping later :)

That's good then, shouldn't be too hard to apply. Hopefully you have caught the ringworm early & you can get rid of it easily :)

Hopefully, you have caught it early enough before it has had a chance to spread.

Please be careful and use good hygiene, disposable gloves and a special pullover when handling ringworm pets; it is one of the few things that can spread to other species and humans. I would recommend a disinfectant like F10 that addresses fungal and not just bacterial germs; give everything a thorough clean. Make sure that you wash any fabrics at least at 60 C.

Thanks all :-)

Yes, i have a special jumper and trousers now for the pigs (I wedge them between my knees to treat them!) and will acquire some gloves on my way home from work today. I have conficlean spray - will check the label when I get home to see if it covers fungal. I always wash the pigs' stuff at 60 degrees so all is good there. And I am keeping a close eye on Silvie cat and myself for any symptoms.

The carrier got a good scrub when we got home last night - it will be the cage's turn tonight!

These pigs have a lot to answer for... :)

Hi, I hope your piggy gets on well. I have spoke alot about my Bo on this forum. My BO died this year, just over a year ago she had a supralorin implant for her ovaries, she made an amazing recovery, she was herself again and grew her hair back. My beautiful Bo started to get symptoms again and I thought that was it. She died quite suddenly of heart failure after getting her ovary symptoms again. I have found it really hard reflecting back. She died three years and three months old. I felt guilty for not spaying her as I have some belief her large ovaries may have had significant strain on her body, I know one ovary was the size of her head. My Peps was spayed with cancer this year Three and three months, the same time her sister died and she recovered well. It made me feel worse about Bo and not having her spayed. I loved her so much I could not cope with the thought of losing her to a spay but I lost her a year later anyway. I was crushed by it. I think I would implant an older piggy and spay a younger one, but it is all so hard. Especially when they are more than just a guinea pig. I guess four years is quite a bit older in piggy terms. I know that the implant works for a max of 18 months and piggies do not have a menopause so it is likely to come back if they live a year later than the implant and there is a thought the next time it does not work as well and the effect of multiple implants is unknown.

Thanks Wiggie, that sounds scary and I'm really sorry it happened to you and Bo. I can only hope that Winnie and I fare better! I'm pleased you've told me about your experiences though so I'll know what to look out for and can hopefully alert the vet early to any problems and we can sort them out if we can.

Winnie is four and a half, so probably later middle age. Had she been much younger I would have thought more about a full spay. The needle wound looks like its healing nicely so

Re ringworm - not sure I should say this as it could be wishful thing and probably tempting fate! But Winnie's lesion is starting to look better already - less scabby, and less pink. The other two pigs, Silvie and me are also showing no signs. Let's hope this continues!

I am glad things are going well. My Bo did not have any problems with her injection wound. It's wired about the ringworm. Fingers crossed it won't spread.

It is hard making the decisions when it comes to pets. I think if My piggy was 4 1/2 I would go for the implant, however I think I would want an X-ray to see the size of the cysts, as it was the X-ray where I could see how large it was in Bo I am not sure the ultra sound makes it as clear. If the ovaries were very large I would consider the spay more strongly.

peps had large ovaries with her spay and the vet struggled to get them out but she pulled through.

it's so hard and I blame myself for Bo, as I was the one that made decisions and I wonder how I could lose such an amazing piggy so young. She may have had heart problems anyway who knows. It is just hard no matter how much you love something it does not mean it will change anything that the future may bring.

Please dont blame yourself, although I know its hard not to! We make decisions to the best of our ability, experience snd knowledge, with advice from our vets. We can never know what might have happened had we made a different decision. You're right though, every big decision is s really tough one.

My Gorgeous Guineas order arrived this morning:) Going to try thd kwench lotion on Winnie this evening and the manuka and neem shampoo next weekend on them all

Thanks for your nice words. I guess losing a piggy to old age leaves less of an opportunity to feel responsible. I just checked out the website Gorgeous Guineas it look interesting. I am bathing my six piggies tonight. I have three curly ones so they will look like puff balls. I use the anti bacterial and fungal shampoos.

I use hibiscrub quite a bit one of my piggies gets chilitis on her lips and my new baby had fungus on her nose. I water it right down and clean the area, it is used for surgical scrubs. I brought my recent bottles from amazon and a local tack shop. I think it is good for fungal and bacterial infections. It can't be used near eyes or in the mouth ect, but on small areas it seems good. Mind you with the fungus on the nose I used daktarin as well it was the one for babies. To sooth a dry area to barrier it my vet was happy with vasaline or a previous vet orabase (that is over the counter and a paste).

Bit of a worrying setback this evening :(

Everything appeared to be going well, implant needle site healing well and no spread of the ringworm. All was well this morning when I put the mycozole on. When I get back from work this evening and go to treat them and feed them, I see that Winnie has no fur on the back of her neck and her skin is red raw :(

I don't think it's the needle site, more where I've been putting the mycozole. Haven't looked too closely as I didn't want to hurt her - I'll let the vet check her out, appointment in an hour. I lifted her out of the cage and put her in the carrier straight away - don't think it's either of the others who have done this to her but just in case.

On the plus side, she's happily tucking in to a pile of hay and bowl of veg!

I wonder how that happened. It will be interesting to see what the vet says. I hope she is not in any pain.

The vet thinks the most likely cause of this is an adverse reaction to the mycozole. She said it takes about a week for this kind of drug to work its way down to the layer of skin where it does its stuff - hence the delayed reaction but massively quick onset. Thankfully she thinks its very unlikely to be a spread of the ringworm - too red and raw, not scurfy and crusty. We have antibiotics and Metacam to help Winnie get better and she's in a separate cage beside the other two -just so they dont help her do any more damage!

I'm sure she is sore, she's a little bit twitchy and agitated on and off, keeps giving herself a good shake. But she certainly hasn't lost her appetite which is always promising!

Wasn't our usual exotics vet wd saw today as it was short notice and late evening but we've got a follow up appointment with her next week

That really sounds awful, if ringworm was not bad enough. I hope Winnie recovers quickly.

Oh no poor little thing, as if she didn't have enough on her plate :(

I hope she gets better soon, lots of soothing vibes to her x

Hoping the drugs are now doing their stuff. The raw patches seem a bit drier and scabbier this morning which I think is a good thing, there's also no new raw bits.

Took Amanda's tip and bought them all some special hay - camomile and dandelion - to help cheer them up :)

I hope that Winnie will feel happier in herself again soon, poor girl!

Thanks, Winnie seems ok considering. Didnt have any suitable fruit juice for mixing sith the drugs yesterday - she was not impressed with the baytril! Got some juice yesterday and this morning's drugs went down a dream. Even 3 extra syringes of probiotic when that arrived in the post!

Gave the other two a GG Manuka and neem bath today which enabled me to see their skin more clearly through wet fur. Not entirely convinced by the state of their skin on the backs of their necks either, bit pink, rough and almost scabby. Won't give them any more mycozole until I can have a chat with the vet on monday.

Poor things :( really hope you can get it sorted soon

Saw the vet this morning - she is surprised by the reaction they've all had to the mycozole, said she's never seen it before. It may be that I'd been spraying it in slightly too concentrated an area. She's going to write to the drug company to tell them about the reaction and recommend they improve the information leaflet with better instructions on how to apply it. I must have read that leaflet a dozen times to be sure I'd got the dose right and was administering it right! Especially as this is not a prescription drug and can be bought by anyone from anywhere with no additional advice.

In good news - not quite all clear but definitely much improved for the pigs :) Winnie's scratching wounds have healed beautifully and no-one else has any signs of ringworm.
Winnie's lesion is clean so we can continue to treat just her with athlete's foot cream. Feeling much happier now they're all on the mend :)

Glad they are on the way to recovery, I hate skin issues and seeing them in distress. hoping it all clears up for them quickly x

Ringworm all gone :)

And Winnie seems to be doing great with the whole hormone thing too :)

She now seems to have a bit of a limp... Poor Winnie, it's all happening to her!

No, not yet - only just noticed it last night and its not significant. Had a quick feel and I can't feel any wounds and none of my prodding made her jump or squeak. Will give it until tomorrow and if its still evident, then off to the vets. Not sure what they'll be able to do for just a nondescript dodgy leg but they might well find something I've not noticed. She is still using that leg, just limping a bit. It hasn't dampened her appetite! Will check her out again when I feed her shortly.

Was at the vets yesterday after the limp became significantly worse yesterday morning. Thankfully she doesn't think it's anything serious, we've got Metacam for a week and to see how we go. There's a vague possibility it could be arthritis but the vet says that doesn't usually come on so quickly. Feel better now with the vet's reassurance :)

I hope the pain relief is enough to help Winnie and the pain is just a temporary thing.

Hopefully, it is just a light sprain that is gone again within a few days.
