Hi all, I am very worried about my 2 girls, Pebbles & Pringles.

As you may or may not know (well you probably do, the amount of times I've posted about it) , Pebbles has had some bleeding from her private area. This has been going on for some weeks now, although it's something that happens every so often, not constantly. She has been to the vets several times and has been on Baytril, Septrin, Metacam, Cerenia and has had 2 X-rays and an ultrasound. Our vet can feel her uterus when palpating her abdomen, and it's also visible on the X-rays, which indicates an issue in that area. The Cerenia antibiotic was the last resort. If that doesn't work - She has to go in for surgery (most likely a spay). The Cerenia was prescribed on the 09/05/14 for 2 weeks, so she has now obviously finished the course.

On the 22nd of this month I had her and the other girls out for nail clipping, and when I put her back into the hutch afterwards I noticed red blood on the bedding, so my initial thoughts were "oh, I must of cut one of their quiks".. So I got Pebbles out and checked her nails and they seemed to be ok. So I turned her over and it turns out the blood was coming from her private area again. I know surgery/spaying is now the only option for her. She is over 3 and a half now so obviously not the youngest for an anesthetic. I am absolutely worried out of my mind... What if I lose her?

Which brings me onto Pringles (sorry for the long post). Pringles has an Ovarian Cyst which was diagnosed in March I believe. Our vet told us to call back to arrange what needs doing about it, and if it begins to bother her. Initially, we were going to wait for Pebbles to be sorted as the cyst wasn't bothering her. Recently however, she has became very hormonal and is rumble strutting, spraying pee at Pebbles, nipping her and biting her ears. They have to literally run past one another to prevent being nipped. Obviously it's unfair for her to be experiencing these hormonal in balances and it's unfair for their relationship to be potentially breaking.

On Monday I shall be booking them both in. I just feel like it's a never ending circle with vet trips, I really want my piggies to be sorted once and for all :(

I'm really sorry they are both going through this, it does sound like spaying is the only option now, has your vet spayed a lot of sows?

Oh no, when it rains, it pours! I'm sorry you have to go through this with both of them at the same time! I wish them both all the best in their surgeries/recoveries. Be well, piggies!

Thank you all, your kind words mean a lot. Yes my vet has neutered a lot of guinea pigs both male and female. She is Molly Varga (one of the leading exotic vets in the country) so it's lucky that I don't have to worry about them not knowing what they're doing.

I'm hoping that Molly will opt for the hormone injections for the cyst (does anybody know how much they are all together?). I just feel like such a bad piggie mum as this has gone on for so long, obviously we needed to try meds first though rather than rushing into surgery.

Each consulation alone is £30 so it ends up costing such a bomb each time and it's money that we can't keep spilling out. Of course my girls will get the treatment they need, it is just a struggle to say the least!

You're doing the right thing, it's great that you've got an experienced vet.

Poor girlies. Hope you get them sorted out soon. Cheshire Pet are very good and Molly is an expert, but even so it's worrying for you and very expensive.

I've recently had two 3-year-old boars neutered by an experienced vet and they made it through the aneasthetic with no issues. I understand your worry, I was exactly the same, but you are using the best possible vet and if anyone can get them through, she can. You are doing the right thing for both of them. I'll keep everything crossed for you. xx

Thank you again everyone, I am glad your boys got through the surgery okay, Elwickcavies. I know spaying is a more invasive surgery but it's great to know your boys are of similar age and made it okay.

Does anyone know the general pricing of a spay and hormone treatments? I think those are going to be the options Molly are going to take. I just wish I knew the cost so I could be prepared! It's the consultation prices which make it difficult because £30 is a lot of money that could go towards the actual procedure.

I may call the vets and say that it's a follow-up check for Pebbles (which it is) so hopefully, fingers crossed I don't get charged. But then again I probably will for Pringles. Urgh!

Both of my two old girlies were spayed last year (within 2 months of each other ) - they were then 4 1/2 - both were fine - as they had been spayed by an experienced vet the op was very quick and the recovery time faster than when they had both also had an external lump removal.Cost was £90 for the op including after care meds - give your vets a ring and they will be more than happy to give you a quote.

Oh that comment has made me feel better, thank you. It's good to know your girlies were older and got through fine (if you know what I mean!). It makes me feel easier about the situation. £90 also isn't too bad, I shall give my vets a call and ask and I'll get back to you. Hopefully it will be in the £80-£90 price range!

I think the hormone jabs are about £23 when mine has them, you should only pay a first consult then you should only pay for the jab the following time. Phone the vet & ask how much they will charge when you go :)

Apologies for the late update! I have got in touch with the vets and I was quoted £69.50 for a spay, so not a bad price at all. I was bricking it incase it was around the £100 mark!
(they didn't say if that was including the after meds but I'm guessing it is)

Oh no, well I'd like to think it includes aftercare. Another vet close by to me spays male piggies for £30, so anesthetic prices must be different everywhere.

It is usually more expensive to spay a sow than it is to neuter a boar as its more invasive- most vets have neutered boars but very few have spayed sows.My regular vet has done loads of boars but only 2 sows and said he would rather Rachael at vale vets in Dursley spayed my girlies as she was an expert (has 7 pigs of her own and spays all her own girlies as well as being an exotics specialist - she also has 2 skunks from when she used to be a zoo vet)

I know about the cost difference but the anesthetic is surely the same price, if anesthetic is usually £45 then how can a vet spay a boar for £30? :P. Do you think the £69.50 isn't including after meds then? I presumed it was which is why I never made sure. D'oh

Most vets charge the same fee for neutering a boar as they do a rabbit - a spay on a guinea is a lot more invasive and will take longer - it seems that vets charge for operating time in 15min blocks (or possibly 20min blocks - Amanda1801 will know more on this) - so it could also be the estimated operating time and the actual cost of time that the vet charges - a bit like labour costs at garages - they can vary hugely from garage to garage -
